BROOKINGS — The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host calving workshops in three towns March 16.
The day begins at 10 a.m. at the Beadle County Extension office in Huron. The workshop then moves to the Hand County Courthouse assembly room in Miller at 2 p.m. The last workshop is set for 6 p.m. at the fire hall in Gann Valley. Each session lasts about 2 hours.
Hand County Extension Livestock Educator Ann Price said the agenda for the workshops should help producers who are approaching calving season.
“We have an great group of speakers and look forward to the opportunity to answer producer questions as calving season gets started,” Price said. “We want to make each session short enough that producers can come in between calving checks and get their questions answered. We want to invite all livestock producers in the various areas to come out and take part.”
County Extension educators, along with Extension Veterinarian Russ Daly, will discuss a wide range of topics including calf scours, the Sandhills calving method, differences between replacers and supplements in relationship to colostrum, and the handling and thawing of colostrum.
Daly will address how producers can make the best decisions about intervening in cases of calving difficulty, best practices in examining and assisting cows during delivery, and when it may be best to call for the assistance of a veterinarian.
The workshops are free. For information, call Ann Price at 605-853-2738.
