Get family out with S.D. Outdoor Expo

HURON — Summer is just around the corner, and opportunities to enjoy family time outdoors are close at hand.  The South Dakota Outdoor Expo, coming to the State Fairgrounds in Huron on June 12-13, is a great chance for the entire family to get outside and enjoy the outdoors together.
Even repeat visitors will find something new at the 2010 Outdoor Expo.
“The Outdoor Expo offers nearly every type of outdoor activity – dog training, fishing, hunting, cooking, kayaking, geocaching, shooting sports and much more,” says Jerome Hertel, State Fairgrounds Manager.  “We want to encourage families to spend some time together and have fun exploring all we have to offer at the SD Outdoor Expo.”
Dock Dogs Big Air Event is coming to the Outdoor Expo – think of it as “a long-jump for dogs.”  Anyone can come to the Outdoor Expo and register a dog to jump – from the smallest Chihuahua to the largest Great Dane – six months and older.  Dock Dogs tracks every official jump of all competitors and ranks them nationally.
The Game, Fish and Parks Department will auction off confiscated items from investigations at the GFP Antler Auction, also on Saturday, June 12.  Items currently listed for sale include antlers, mounts, tree stands, and more.
Kids, 12 years old and younger, will have fun catching-and-releasing trout in a 6,000-gallon glass aquarium provided by Blue Water Promotions.
Another new event at this year’s Outdoor Expo is the Dutch Oven Challenge.  Entrants will compete on Sunday, June 13, with their main dishes to win a $100 Scheels Prize Package.  The public will be able to sample those main dishes when judging has ended.
Jack Link’s is again sponsoring the “Show Us Your Wild Side” promotion.  To enter, people can e-mail their favorite photos of having fun in the South Dakota outdoors to sdoutdoorexpo@state.sd.us .  Entries will be posted on the Outdoor Expo website, and the winning photos will be chosen after the promotion ends on June 7.  The winner will receive a one-year’s supply of beef jerky, courtesy of Jack Link’s.
