From wife to mother to business owner, value found in relationships

The Farmer’s Wife Boutique owner Samantha Miller answered the following questions.

Q Tell us about your business and the products and services you offer.

A The Farmer’s Wife Boutique is a locally owned small business started by the wife of a fifth-generation Brown County farmer. We have two little girls and a little boy due the beginning of November. The Farmer’s Wife Boutique carries a variety of unique lifestyle/gift lines; maternity, infant apparel/supplies; women’s accessories and women’s clothing sizes small-3XL.

Q How and/or why did you get into this business?

A The Farmer’s Wife Boutique began as a hobby. I was a stay-at-home mom and farm wife with a 1-year-old daughter. I needed something for myself to be “Samantha.” My husband always joked with me it was too bad I couldn’t put my online shopping skills to better use and sell everything I was buying.

I began a Facebook page in July 2014. By August, I had launched a website. In September, we began attending vendors show across the Dakotas. In December 2014, I signed a lease for my first brick-and-mortar location in Groton. A year later, and even though I was nine months pregnant, we moved our business into The Ward Plaza downtown Aberdeen.

Q How many employees do you have?

A Three.

Q What is your business’s best asset?

A Our best asset is customer service. We believe strongly in the relationships each employee builds with every person who walks through our doors. They aren’t customers to us, rather they are our friends, neighbors and family members. We value relationships more than the dollar amount attached to the sale.

Q What are you most proud of?

A I am most proud of my ability to overcome challenges. I never imagined that I could own my business with absolutely no degree or knowledge of business. I’m also incredibly proud of all the relationships and friendships I have made.

Q What makes your business stand out from its competitors? How do you keep up with changes?

A The Farmer’s Wife Boutique stands out with our honesty. I’ve always chosen to be up front with my customers and include them in my personal life. They know my family, challenges, victories and what is happening in our life on the farm. I keep up with all the changes by investing in myself. Personal development is the best tool any business owner can invest in.

Q What’s the best piece of business advice or compliment you have received? What would you tell a new business?

A Remember your biggest and only true competitor is yourself. You alone are responsible for the success or failure of your business.

Q What are your goals for the future?

A To maintain the business and relationships I have built. I want to remain the small mom-and-pop shop based on honesty and relationships.
