The Milbank FFA Chapter had FFA members qualify in 3 team events and two individual FFA Leadership Career Development Events at the District I FFA, which was held on Nov. 6. The Milbank FFA members placed in team events of: Parliamentary Procedure, Agriculture Communications and Agriculture Issues. The Milbank FFA members will now participate at the State FFA Leadership Career Development Event at Pierre on December 3-4. The FFA team/members placing first at the State FFA Leadership will represent South Dakota at the National FFA Convention in October.
The Milbank Parliamentary Procedure, placed 1st, Gold, in Career Development Event. In the event, the FFA officers must take a test over parliamentary procedure; which includes how to conduct a meeting and how various motions are used. Each FFA officer team then must perform a mock meeting with a 12 minute time limit, with a specific topic in front of a group of judges, who selected the topic from a given list. Each FFA Officer must perform a given parliamentary procedure ability and then perform a second ability not listed. After the meeting, the judges then ask each officer a question dealing with their specific motion. This year Milbank Senior FFA Conduct of Meeting team is leaded by: President-Chase Pinkert; and Milbank FFA Chapter members of: Magally Aburto, Sara Capp, Kellie Christians, Claire Mischel and Nathan Loutsch and alternate Callie Bolin.
The Agriculture Issue team placed 1st, Gold; is made of Milbank FFA members of Sara Capp, Kellie Christians, Heidi Capp, Rhianna Folk, Stewart Loehrer, Jackson McFaden and Eric VanSambeek. Suzanne Sousa coached and prep the team. This year topic is “Curlyleaf Pondweed—Friend or Foe.” The team has been doing local presentations around the Milbank community as part of the participation for the District and State FFA Leadership.
The Agriculture Communication team placed 2nd, Silver; is made of Milbank FFA members of Siri Bien, Jessica Pillatzki, Logan Meyer and Shelby Lee. The team prepared an agricultural communication plan dealing with agriculture advocacy.
In the Extemporaneous Speech Contest, Nathan Loutsch, placed Silver and will be advancing on to State FFA Leadership. Callie Bolin also participated. The Extemporaneous Speech Career Development Event is designed to develop the ability of all FFA members to express himself/herself on a given agricultural related subject without having prepared or rehearsed its content in advance. Members have to prepare a 4-6-minute presentation on a current agricultural issue in 30 minutes. The topics are unknown to the FFA members until they draw a specific topic for their speech when they start preparing.
In Prepared Public Speaking, Magally Aburto placed 1st Gold. The purpose of the FFA Prepared Public Speaking Career Development Event is to develop agricultural leadership, communication skills, and promote interest in citizenship by providing member participation in agricultural public speaking activities, by researching, writing and presenting a 6-8 minute speech.
Claire Mischel was selected as District I Secretary and Nathan Loutsch as District I Sentinel. Claire and Nathan will represent District I at the State Legislative Breakfast in January and assist with the FFA Petting Zoo at the State Fair. Kellie Christians also interview for District I officers.
