Cast to perform new original play

It’s a road trip and a mystery all in one in Storybook Land Theatre’s production of “The Great Crabcrangrapegranate Gambit” this week (July 23-27).

Performances are at 10 a.m. Tuesday, 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Saturday’s performance is part of the Storybook Land Festival, taking place at Wylie Park all day. All performances are free and open to the public at the Storybook Land Castle.

“The Great Crabcrangrapegranate Gambit” is another original play. The show was written by Paige Walth, an SBLT actor, and conceived by the cast.

It tells the tale of a band of familiar characters — Aiken Drum (Chase Roesch), Little Green Frog (Emily Davis), Humpty Dumpty (Nick Brandt) and Tony Chestnut (Brian T. Schultz) — as they attempt to help out their manager, Moose (Austin Vetter), who can no longer find his favorite juice in stores.

Along the way, they encounter the juice businessman J.R. Splashio (Liz Lewno) and Detectives Fish (Walth) and Chips (Isabella Seaton). Will the band be able to save the juice recipe from the clutches of the evil Flea Fly Mosquito and make it to their Big Gig on time? Or will their little red wagon break down for good on the way?

Brandt, 17, will be a senior at Aberdeen Central this fall. Although this is his second year with the troupe, his love of theater goes back to Aberdeen Community Theatre’s Young People’s Theatre’s production of “Captain Noah” when he was in fifth grade.

“I love becoming different characters and making other people laugh,” Brandt said in a news release. “I hope to keep doing theater for years to come.

“We take up every job related to the show; we’re not just the actors or the techies,” Brandt said. “Every aspect of the show is done by the cast. I think the shows really become our own, and we each have something to add.”

“We’re excited to present our second original show of the season this week,” SBLT director Schultz said in the release. “We’ve had fun including lots of our familiar warm-ups in this show, and we hope that audiences will enjoy seeing characters that we’ve sung about for years come to life on the castle stage.”
