Event for Vietnam veterans planned
An event called “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” will be presented Sept. 13 and 14 by the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce Military/Veterans Committee and the local Vietnam Veterans Events Committee.
The event will be held at the Brown County Fairgrounds.
Sites for recreational vehicles and campers will be available for those wishing to stay at the fairgrounds. The weekend will include food and local entertainment, starting the afternoon and evening of Sept. 13 at Centennial Village.
The Sept. 14 festivities will begin with a rededication ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Vietnam Memorial in Anderson Park. After the ceremony, activities include a poker run, golf tournament and other outdoor activities, including children’s entertainment. Food and beverages will be provided as well as a Vietnam-era (from the 1960s and ’70s) music show Saturday evening. All veterans and the public are invited to attend.
On March 6, Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed into law a working holiday (for March 30) in South Dakota entitled “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day,” effective July 1. The holiday is dedicated to the remembrance and recognition of the service and sacrifice rendered by the nations’ veterans of the Vietnam War.
“The year 2013 also marks approximately 50 years since the beginning of the Vietnam War and exactly 40 years since the signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord,” according to a news release.“Many of these veterans did not receive the homecoming they deserved when they returned from Vietnam. This event will hopefully allow area Vietnam veterans to experience the welcome they deserved so long ago.”
The committee is accepting support, input and ideas from anyone who would like to assist with the event.
If planning on attending, contact Nicole Renner at 605-848-2874 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Organizers would like to get an accurate count to make sure there are enough resources for everyone.
