Watercolors on display at Lamont Gallery

The watercolors of Kathy Miller, who divides her time between Northfield, Minn., and Wecota, are on display through Oct. 4 in the Dacotah Prairie Museum’s Lamont Gallery.

An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19. The artist will be present to speak about her works. Refreshments will be served.

According to the museum, Miller’s paintings reflect her passion for the beauty of nature, capturing fleeting moments in time when the magic of light changes the ordinary into the extraordinary.

“The paintings range in scope from intimate, close-up floral and still-life compositions to broad, panoramic landscapes,” according to a news release. “The use of numerous layers of saturated color, intricate details and patterns, and strong-value contrasts combine to enable her to create a highly sensory interpretation of the world she loves.”

The paintings in this show explore themes in nature — trees, peonies and water lilies. They are part of a 30-painting grant project in which Miller completed a series of works on each theme. The impetus behind this collection of works is a quote by French essayist Marcel Proust: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in seeing with new eyes.”

Her goal was to broaden how she approached her subject matter, experimenting with compositional format, size and points of view.

Miller spent 20 years as an elementary classroom teacher. Shortly before retiring in 2007, she took her first painting class and, since then, has taken numerous watercolor workshops. L’Atelier Art Studio Workshop in Janesville, Wisc.; Art Study Watercolor Workshop in Giverny, France; Ghost Ranch Workshop in Abiquiu, N.M., are a few of the numerous workshops she has attended.

Miller is a Signature Member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society, and her paintings have earned numerous awards, including Best of Show at the Minnesota Watercolor Society Spring Juried Exhibition in 2013. Also in 2013, Miller received a McKnight Individual Artist Grant awarded by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council.

Miller’s paintings are on display in various galleries in Minnesota, including Northfield, Zumbrota, Red Wing and Alma, and her painting classes are offered in several locations in Minnesota. All her artwork may be seen on her website at kmillerwatercolors.com.
