South Dakota

For the week ending Oct. 10, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 22% very short, 38% short, 39% adequate and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 36% very short, 32% short, 31% adequate and 1% surplus.

Field crops report: Corn condition rated 15% very poor, 25% poor, 33% fair, 25% good and 2% excellent. Corn mature was 94%, equal to last year and ahead of 80% for the five-year average. Harvested was 33%, near 36% last year, but ahead of 17% average.

Soybean condition rated 10% very poor, 27% poor, 39% fair, 24% good and 0% excellent. Soybeans harvested was 69%, behind 79% last year but well ahead of 42% average.

Winter wheat planted was 90%, ahead of 85% last year and 82% average. Emerged was 42%, behind 51% last year and 53% average.

Sorghum condition rated 14% very poor, 30% poor, 36% fair, 20% good and 0% excellent. Sorghum mature was 96%, near 98% last year but well ahead of 69% average. Harvested was 55%, near 57% last year but well ahead of 26% average.

Sunflowers harvested was 23%, ahead of 17% last year and 10% average.

Pasture and range report: Pasture and range conditions rated 53% very poor, 32% poor, 13% fair, 2% good and 0% excellent.

North Dakota

For the week ending Oct. 10, there were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 27% very short, 27% short, 41% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 36% very short, 29% short, 32% adequate and 3% surplus.

Field crops report: Soybean condition rated 16% very poor, 31% poor, 36% fair, 17% good and 0% excellent. Soybeans harvested was 73%, behind 80% last year but well ahead of 51% for the five-year average.

Winter wheat planted was 93%, near 90% last year and ahead of 81% average. Emerged was 66%, equal to last year and ahead of 56% average.

Corn condition rated 16% very poor, 29% poor, 36% fair, 18% good and 1% excellent. Corn mature was 93%, near 91% last year and ahead of 75% average. Harvested was 29%, ahead of 23% last year and 10% average.

Sugar beet condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 27% fair, 50% good and 17% excellent. Sugar beets harvested was 19%, well behind 87% last year and 57% average.

Sunflower condition rated 11% very poor, 29% poor, 38% fair, 21% good and 1% excellent. Sunflowers bracts turned brown was 91%, near 88% last year and ahead of 83% average. Harvested was 14%, behind 23% last year but near 11% average.

Potatoes vines dry was 95%, behind 100% last year and near 98% average. Harvested was 76%, behind 93% last year but near 75% average.

Dry edible beans harvested was 90%, behind 95% last year but ahead of 80% average.

Pasture and range report: Pasture and range conditions rated 48% very poor, 28% poor, 17% fair, 7% good and 0% excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 48% very short, 33% short, 19% adequate and 0% surplus.

Minnesota

According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, increased rainfall allowed 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 10.

Reports indicated that warm weather slowed sugar beet harvesting. Harvesting of row crops was the week’s primary activity.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 4% very short, 21% short, 70% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 11% very short, 36% short, 51% adequate and 2% surplus.

Field crops report: Corn in the mature stage reached 97%, equal to last year but ten days ahead of the 5-year average. Corn harvested for grain reached 36%, two days ahead of last year and 12 days ahead of the average. Moisture content was 19%. Corn condition rated 40% good to excellent.

Soybeans harvested reached 83%, equal to last year but over two weeks ahead of the average.

Dry beans harvest was 92% complete.

Potatoes were 82% harvested.

Sunflowers reached 33% harvested. Sunflower condition rated 45% good to excellent.

Sugar beets reached 17% harvested. Sugar beets condition rated 72% good to excellent.

Pasture and range report: Pasture condition was 16% very poor, 28% poor, 38% fair, 15% good and 3% excellent. No reports of livestock concerns were received.

Iowa

Scattered precipitation slowed harvest in some areas, but statewide Iowa’s farmers had 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 10, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Field activities included harvesting soybeans and corn, fall tillage and applying fertilizer. Topsoil moisture levels rated 12% very short, 31% short, 55% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 18% very short, 36% short, 45% adequate and 1% surplus.

Field crops report: Ninety-five percent of the corn crop has reached maturity, 8 days ahead of the five-year average. Close to one-third of corn for grain has been harvested at 30% complete statewide, also eight days ahead of normal. Moisture content of field corn being harvested for grain was 19%. Iowa’s corn condition rated 62% good to excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves or beyond reached 96%, one week ahead of normal. More than half of Iowa’s soybean crop has been harvested at 56%, nine days ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition was rated 63% good to excellent.

Pasture and range report: Pasture condition rated 32% good to excellent. Overall, livestock were faring well, although conditions varied with some reports of muddy feedlots but also water shortage issues for cattle on pasture.

Nebraska

For the week ending Oct. 10, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 38% short, 54% adequate and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 12% very short, 44% short, 43% adequate and 1% surplus.

Field crops report: Corn condition rated 5% very poor, 7% poor, 18% fair, 44% good and 26% excellent. Corn mature was 93%, near 95% last year and 89% for the five-year average. Harvested was 29%, near 32% last year but ahead of 22% average.

Soybean condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 18% fair, 52% good and 23% excellent. Soybeans harvested was 60%, behind 78% last year but ahead of 42% average.

Winter wheat planted was 88%, equal to last year and near 89% average. Emerged was 60%, near 56% last year and 63% average.

Sorghum condition rated 6% very poor, 14% poor, 28% fair, 38% good and 14% excellent. Sorghum mature was 90%, near 94% last year and 89% average. Harvested was 38%, ahead of 29% last year and 24% average.

Dry edible beans harvested was 81%, behind 86% last year.
