South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) is now accepting returned licenses for all big game and limited draw seasons. Hunters who do not plan on hunting for any reason may submit their licenses for a full refund, no questions asked, and preference points will be reinstated for that season.

This opportunity is to ensure that if a hunter is unable to hunt this fall, they may retain their preference points and receive a refund while providing the opportunity to another hunter.

Firearm deer season license returns

All returned, limited-draw firearm deer licenses postmarked by September 29 will be posted on the GFP licensing website on October 6 and made available via a lottery drawing process. Individuals who do not currently hold a firearm deer license that allows the harvest of a buck are eligible to apply. These applicants may apply for a first choice and a second choice across all available licenses and no preference points will be used.

Returned licenses must be postmarked by September 29 and the application process will be available online only beginning October 6. Applications must be received online by Wednesday, October 13 at 8 a.m. CDT.

Other big game seasons (firearm and archery)

Individuals looking to return a license for any other limited-draw season such as antelope, elk, nonresident waterfowl and/or Gavins Point paddlefish must have their licenses postmarked by the day before the respective season begins. Licenses that are received with a postmark date after the respective season begins will not be refunded.

Returned licenses for these seasons will not be available via lottery draw, but will rather be distributed to the next individual in line, based upon the original draw order. These individuals will be contacted directly by GFP.
