For the week ending September 11, 2022, there were 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 26% very short, 40% short, 32% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 24% very short, 42% short, 33% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 12% very poor, 15% poor, 30% fair, 37% good, and 6% excellent. Corn dough was 96%, near 100% last year and 97% for the five-year average. Dented was 78%, behind 83% last year, but ahead of 72% average. Mature was 18%, behind 31% last year and 23% average.

Soybean condition rated 6% very poor, 15% poor, 29% fair, 44% good, and 6% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 30%, well behind 55% last year, and behind 39% average.

Winter wheat planted was 10%, near 12% last year, and equal to average.

Sorghum condition rated 5% very poor, 20% poor, 36% fair, 39% good, and 0% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 89%, near 90% last year, but ahead of 74% average. Mature was 34%, near 30% last year, and ahead of 16% average. Harvested was 1%, near 2% last year.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 24% very poor, 29% poor, 31% fair, 15% good, and 1% excellent.

North Dakota

For the week ending September 11, 2022, there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Field Crops Report: Soybean condition rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 37% fair, 49% good, and 6% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 37%, well behind 64% last year, and behind 51% for the five-year average.

Spring wheat mature was 96%, near 100% both last year and average. Harvested was 79%, behind 97% last year and 88% average.

Durum wheat coloring was 95%, behind 100% both last year and average. Mature was 81%, behind 100% last year and 97% average. Harvested was 65%, well behind 95% last year, and behind 80% average.

Winter wheat planted was 21%, equal to last year, and ahead of 15% average.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 18% very poor, 16% poor, 24% fair, 31% good, and 11% excellent. Corn dented was 86%, near 88% last year, and equal to the five-year average. Mature was 36%, near 33% last year, and ahead of 27% average. Harvested was 1%, equal to last year, and near 2% average.

Soybean condition rated 13% very poor, 17% poor, 27% fair, 34% good, and 9% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 43%, equal to last year, and ahead of 37% average.

Winter wheat planted was 5%, behind 15% last year and 10% average.

Sorghum condition rated 44% very poor, 22% poor, 14% fair, 15% good, and 5% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 75%, behind 92% last year and 83% average. Mature was 14%, behind 24% last year, and near 17% average. Harvested was 1%, near 2% last year, and equal to the average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 3% very poor, 4% poor, 31% fair, 59% good, and 3% excellent. Dry edible beans setting pods was 95%, behind 100% both last year and average. Dropping leaves was 49%, well behind 74% last year. Harvested was 8%, well behind 30% last year.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 50% very poor, 28% poor, 14% fair, 6% good, and 2% excellent.

Iowa

Average rainfall statewide still left Iowa farmers with 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 11, 2022, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Fieldwork included chopping corn, harvesting corn for seed, cutting hay, and seeding cover crops. Producers were also preparing equipment for harvest.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 16% very short, 29% short, 54% adequate and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 19% very short, 32% short, 48% adequate and 1% surplus.

Corn in the dough stage or beyond was 98%, 2 days ahead of the 5-year average. 84% of Iowa’s corn crop has reached the dent stage or beyond, 1 day behind last year. 23% of the state’s corn crop was mature, 2 days behind last year and 1 day behind the five-year average. Corn condition fell 3% to 63% good to excellent.

With virtually all soybeans setting pods, 48% have reached coloring or beyond, 4 days behind last year and 2 days behind the 5-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves were at 9%, 1 week behind last year and 5 days behind the average. Soybean condition dropped 3% points to 63% good to excellent.

87% of the state’s third cutting of alfalfa hay was complete.

Pasture condition remained 32% good to excellent. Some producers were feeding cattle high-moisture corn and hay.

Minnesota

Minnesota had 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending September 11, 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Most of the state saw higher-than-normal temperatures and little rain.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 7% very short, 24% short, 67% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 6% very short, 21% short, 70% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Corn dough or beyond reached 97% and corn dented or beyond reached 73%. Corn mature was at 8%, over a week behind the five-year average. Corn condition was 3% very poor, 6% poor, 29% fair, 48% good, and 14% excellent. Corn for silage was 20% harvested.

Soybean coloring reached 49%. Soybeans dropping leaves was at 6%, 10 days behind average. Soybean condition was 2% very poor, 5% poor, 28% fair, 52% good, and 13% excellent.

Oats were 90% harvested, barley was 78% harvested, and spring wheat was 75% harvested.

Dry edible beans were 68% dropping leaves and 20% harvested. Dry edible bean condition was 0% very poor, 2% poor, 28% fair, 60% good, and 10% excellent.

Sunflower condition was 0% very poor, 0% poor, 18% fair, 76% good, and 6% excellent.

Potato harvest was 32% complete. Potato condition was 0% very poor, 0% poor, 3% fair, 68% good, and 29% excellent.

Sugarbeet harvest was 4% complete. Sugarbeet condition was 2% very poor, 2% poor, 18% fair, 22% good, and 56% excellent.
