South Dakota

For the week ending October 30, 2022, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 47% very short, 37% short, 15% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 42% very short, 40% short, 17% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn harvested was 82%, ahead of 70% last year, and well ahead of 52% for the five-year average.

Soybeans harvested was 97%, near 95% last year, and ahead of 87% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 25% poor, 37% fair, 27% good, and 2% excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 68%, well behind 90% last year, and behind 87% average.

Sorghum harvested was 78%, behind 83% last year, but ahead of 61% average.

Sunflowers harvested was 60%, ahead of 51% last year, and well ahead of 39% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 30% very poor, 31% poor, 26% fair, 13% good, and 0% excellent.

North Dakota

For the week ending October 30, 2022, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 23% very short, 50% short, 26% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 21% very short, 47% short, 30% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybeans harvested was 99%, ahead of 94% last year and 82% for the five-year average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 30% fair, 60% good, and 7% excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 91%, near 93% last year and 89% average.

Corn harvested was 74%, ahead of 67% last year, and well ahead of 47% average.

Sunflower condition rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 35% fair, 53% good, and 4% excellent. Sunflowers harvested was 62%, ahead of 50% last year and 49% average.

Flaxseed harvested was 99%, near 100% last year and 98% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 2% very poor, 21% poor, 45% fair, 31% good, and 1% excellent. Stock water supplies rated 13% very short, 42% short, 45% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Nebraska

For the week ending October 30, 2022, there were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 44% very short, 41% short, 15% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 46% very short, 38% short, 16% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn harvested was 80%, ahead of 70% last year and 61% for the five-year average.

Soybeans harvested was 97%, ahead of 91% last year and 89% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 15% very poor, 23% poor, 40% fair, 21% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 94%, ahead of 89% last year, and near 90% average.

Sorghum mature was 98%, equal to both last year and average. Harvested was 75%, near 77% last year, but ahead of 65% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 44% very poor, 38% poor, 16% fair, 2% good, and 0% excellent.

Iowa

Row crop harvest was winding down ahead of normal as Iowa’s farmers had 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 30, 2022, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork included harvesting row crops, completing fall tillage, applying fall fertilizer, baling stalks, and hauling manure. Field fires were reported again in some areas with continued dry conditions.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 24 percent very short, 44 percent short, 32 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 26 percent very short, 45 percent short, 29 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus.

Harvest of the corn for grain crop reached 77 percent complete, 5 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the average. Corn harvest in northeast and south central Iowa continued to lag behind with 58 and 59 percent complete, respectively, while 95 percent has been harvested in northwest Iowa. Moisture content of field corn being harvested for grain was 17 percent.

Soybeans harvested reached 94 percent complete, 1 week ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of the average. Southwest and south central Iowa producers still had over 15 percent of their soybean crop left to harvest.

Pasture condition rated 25 percent good to excellent. Dry conditions were an issue for cattle and many producers were moving them off pasture.

Minnesota

Minnesota had 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending October 30, 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Average temperatures were five-to-ten degrees higher than normal over most of the state.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 21 percent very short, 33 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 17 percent very short, 35 percent short, 47 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

Corn harvested for grain was at 80 percent, on pace with last year and about ten days ahead of the 5-year average. Corn moisture content of grain at harvest averaged 17 percent.

Sunflowers were 55 percent harvested, about ten days behind last year and six days behind the 5-year average.

Pasture condition was rated 8 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 36 percent good, and 3 percent excellent.
