Red meat production up from last year
SIOUX FALLS – Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 102.5 million pounds during November. This was up 2 percent from one year ago but down 5 percent from last month. For November, both pork production and sheep and lamb production were up from a year ago, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 456,400 head during November, compared to 454,200 head the year before. Average live weight was 270 pounds, unchanged from November 2011.
Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 300 head during November, up 100 head from last year. Average live weight was 119 pounds, which was up 5 pounds from November 2011.
