National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale averages $7,720

The 2013 National Gelbvieh and Balancer sale was held January 13, 2013 at the National Western Stock Show. The sale set an impressive average of $7,720 on 25 lots. Breeders and cattlemen filled the Livestock Center Auction Arena to bid on the elite Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics offered from outstanding seedstock programs from across the country. The sale was managed by Cattlemen’s Connection, Roger Gatz of Hiawatha, Kan., and is sponsored by the American Gelbvieh Association. Jim Birdwell of Fletcher, Okla., was the auctioneer.

Topping the sale at $25,000 was EGL Janelle Y011 ET consigned by Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, S.D. This black, double polled purebred bred heifer had many friends on sale day. She is sired by JBOB 3303K ET “Junior”, and goes back to the great donor cow EGL Phoebe G374. EGL Janelle was tested for feed efficiency at the Eagle Pass Ranch facilities and finished with a -2.82 RFI score and a 3.32 lbs./day ADG. She sold safe in calf for a March baby by EGL Freedom 5203. She was purchased by a group of breeders including Thorstenson Lazy TV Ranch, Selby, S.D.; Green Hills Gelbvieh, Mt. Ulla, N.C.; Pleasant Meadow Farms, Glascow, Ky; and Leonhardt Cattle Co., Lake Preston, S.D.

The second high selling lot was the winner of the 2013 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity PGH Rockin The Bakken Z17. He is a red, homozygous polled February 23, 2012 son of COLB Mr Xavier X812. Prairie Hills Gelbvieh of Gladstone, N.D., bred this winning entry who sold for $20,000. Buying possession of the bull was Chimney

Butte Ranch, Mandan, N.D. Semen packages were purchased by Golden Buckle Gelbvieh, Medina, N.D., Twisted T Gelbvieh, Asquith, SK, Canada, Twin Bridge Farm, Lomond, AB, Canada and Wilkinson Gelbvieh, Model, Co.

Judd Ranch, Pomona, Kan., offered pick of their 2013 National Western Stock Show pen bulls. The morning of the sale, the NWSS Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Bull Show was held. Judd Ranch exhibited the champion pen of 3 Gelbvieh bulls, champion pen of 5 Gelbvieh bulls, and reserve pen of 5 Balancer bulls. Post Rock Cattle Company, Barnard, Kan., was the winning bidder of this pick at $15,000.

Bar Arrow Cattle Company, Phillipsburg, Kan., sold pick of their 2012 bull or heifer calf crop. This pick has produced some outstanding, breed changing genetics in past years. At the fall of the gavel, Thorstenson Lazy TV Ranch of Selby, S.D., purchased this pick for $10,000.

Eagle Pass Ranch of Highmore, S.D., purchased pick of the 2012 heifer calves or 2011 bred heifers from Thorstenson Lazy TV Ranch, Selby, S.D. For their $10,000 final bid, Eagle Pass Ranch will be able to pick from 300 heifer calves and 120 bred heifers.
