North Dakota growers, dealers and processors held 12.7 million hundredweight (cwt) of potatoes in storage February 1, 2013, up 43 percent from a year ago and 23 percent from 2011. Current stocks represent 50 percent of the production, up from 47 percent in 2012 and 2011. Total stocks are defined as all potatoes on hand, regardless of use, including those that will be lost through future shrinkage and dumping.

Comparing stocks by type, russets accounted for 69 percent of the total, up from 67 percent in 2012 and 68 percent in 2011. Round whites were 11 percent of the total, down from 12 percent in 2012 and 13 percent in 2011. Long whites were 4 percent, same as in 2012, but down from 5 percent in 2011. All white potatoes, at 15 percent of total stocks, down from 16 percent in 2012 and 18 percent in 2011. Reds, at 15 percent of total stocks, were down from 16 percent in 2012, but up from 13 percent in 2011. Yellows, at 1 percent, were the same as both 2012 and 2011.
