2013 South Dakota prospective plantings
SIOUX FALLS — Producers in South Dakota intend to plant 250,000 less acres of corn for all purposes in 2013, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, South Dakota Field Office. These intentions are based on a March 1 producer survey. Any planting changes due to weather or other factors will be accounted for when actual plantings are obtained in early June.
Corn acres planted in South Dakota for 2013 are expected to total 5.9 million acres, down 4 percent from last year’s record 6.15 million acres planted.
Soybean acres planted are expected to total 4.6 million acres, down 3 percent from last year’s record 4.75 million acres planted.
All hay acreage to be harvested is estimated at 3.1 million acres, unchanged from last year.
Winter wheat acres seeded last fall totaled 1.25 million acres, down 5 percent from a year earlier. Other spring wheat seeding intentions are at 1.1 million acres, up 2 percent from 2012. Durum wheat seeding intentions, at 8,000 acres, are up 3,000 acres from last year.
Sunflower planted acreage is expected to total 650,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from last year. Oil sunflowers will account for 580,000 acres, unchanged from 2012. Non-oil sunflowers will account for 70,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from 2012.
Sorghum planted acreage is expected to total 230,000 acres, up 15 percent from last year.
Oats acres to be seeded, estimated at 190,000 acres, are up 19 percent from 2012.
Barley planting intentions, estimated at 30,000 acres, are down 4,000 acres from 2012.
Flax acres to be seeded, estimated at 7,000 acres, are down 1,000 acres from 2012.
Dry edible bean planting intentions, estimated at 13,000 acres, are unchanged from year ago.

March 1, 2013 Grain stocks
SIOUX FALLS — Corn stocks in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 275.2 million bushels, down 14 percent from March 1, 2012, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, South Dakota Field Office. Of the total, 165 million bushels are stored on farms, down 18 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 110.2 million bushels, are down 9 percent from last year. own 18 percent from a year ago. Soybeans stored in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 41.3 million bushels, down 30 percent from last year. On-farm stocks are 19 million bushels, down 38 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 22.3 million bushels, are down 22 percent from 2012.
All Wheat stored in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 50.8 million bushels, up 25 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks of 24.5 million bushels are up 9 percent from 2012. Off-farm stocks of 26.3 million bushels are up 45 percent from last year.
Oats stored in all positions on March 1, 2013 totaled 2.1 million bushels, down 24 percent from last year. On-farm stocks of 1.5 million bushels are down 25 percent from 2012. Off-farm stocks of 638 thousand bushels are down 21 percent from last year.
Sorghum off farm stocks on March 1, 2013 totaled 942 thousand bushels, down 55 percent from March 2012.
Barley on-farm stocks on March 1, 2013, at a record low, totaled 100 thousand bushels, down 66 percent from 2012.
