SDSU Extension Gardening 101 Workshops begin April 26

BROOKINGS – Learn about raised bed, no till gardening, lasagna gardening, using containers of all kinds, water conservation, mulching and proper watering techniques during SDSU Extension’s Gardening 101 Workshops which begin April 26.

During the workshops attendees will learn from SDSU Extension Specialists and find answers to their common questions. Attendees will also plant a one gallon pot with spring vegetable seed to take home along with two packages of seed appropriate for pot culture.

Gardening 101 Workshop Schedule

Workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. and is on your own.

April 26 – Hot Springs, United Churches, 342 N Garden Street

April 27 – Faith, VFW Hall, Main Street

April 27 – Huron, Dept. of Health Building, 1110 3rd St. SW

Workshops cost $40 per person, which includes all supplies to take home.

· Insects and Pesticides Workshop: Learn which insects in your garden are good, bad and just plain fun. Learn organic and conventional ways to manage pest populations. See mounted insects to learn what actual specimens look like so you can identify them in your garden.

Workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. and is on your own. Workshops cost $25 per person.

· Soils and Fertilizers: Is your soil tough clay, high pH, rocky, saline? Learn about different soil types, how to amend your soil, and how the drought affects it. Handle soil samples to become familiar with texture, and ask our fertilizer specialist what works best for you.

June 8 – White River, United Methodist Church

June 22 – Watertown, Watertown Regional Extension Center, 1910 W. Kemp Ave

Workshops will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Workshops cost $15 per person.
