Barley will be the focus during the NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center’s summer field day on Wednesday, July 10.

The field day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at noon. A meal will follow the morning activities for those attending the tour.

The Dickinson REC summer field day is being held in conjunction with a barley field school sponsored by the North Dakota State University Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences and the North Dakota Barley Council.

“Our stops will take us to various barley variety test plots,” says Patrick Carr, Dickinson REC agronomist. “In addition to what would be typical, we will have barley varieties that represent every decade from 1920 to the present. This group also has requested that we discuss the tillage and crop sequence aspects of barley.”

Presenters include Carr, Rich Horsley, NDSU Plant Sciences Department chair and coordinator of the NDSU malting barley improvement program, and Paul Schwartz, NDSU malt barley quality professor.

In answer to requests for a review of organic farm research at the DREC by those attending the barley field school, Carr and other specialists will show organic plots and discuss rotational studies that are in progress.

Another area of research at the DREC involves cowpeas.

“The Dickinson REC, along with others in North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, received a grant to look at cowpeas for their cover crop potential,” Carr says. “We will be screening several different accessions of cowpeas from around the world to see if they might fit into the cover crop scenarios in North Dakota.”

Topics for this year’s field day are:

· There’s how much barley in my beer?

· Barley varieties from the end of prohibition to today

· Barley variety selection – is it affected by a previous crop and tillage system?

· Organic herbicides – do they work?

· The long-term organic tillage systems trial

· Screening cowpeas for cover crop cocktails

The Dickinson REC headquarters is near the corner of State Avenue and Empire Road in Dickinson, N.D. The field day is sponsored by the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information, contact the Dickinson REC at (701) 456-1100 or
