Twenty young Angus enthusiasts were selected to participate in the 2013 class of Beef Leaders Institute (BLI), hosted June 17-20 by the American Angus Association. During the sixth-annual BLI, South Dakota Angus breeders were able to experience all aspects of the beef industry. Representing the state were Casey Maher, Morristown, S.D., and Chad Rotenberger, Ludlow, S.D.

The goal of the four-day institute is to provide young producers, between the ages of 25 and 45, the opportunity to network with peers in the breed, while learning more about the Association and the entire beef production chain.

Made possible by funds from the Angus Foundation, BLI participants began their experience with an in-depth tour of the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. While there, they heard about the variety of ways the Association works for its nearly 25,000 members.

Throughout BLI travels, they visited Gregory Feedlot, Tabor, Iowa; a Tyson, beef processing plant, Dakota City, Neb.; Whole Foods Market, grocery store, Omaha, Neb.; Cargill Meat Solutions, deli meat processing plant, Nebraska City, Neb.; and food distributor, Sysco, Lincoln, Neb.

Participants in this year’s BLI class were: Mathew Bolduc, Claresholm, Alta., Canada; Sarah Fuller, Twin Falls, Idaho; Josh Malson, Parma, Idaho; Andy Howell, Milltown, Ind.; Andrew Stewart, Greensburg, Ind.; Damon New, Leavenworth, Kan.; Rhonda Wulf, Morris, Minn.
