Brown County Youth Celebrate National 4-H Week
Aberdeen – More than 6 million young people across the country today will be celebrating National 4-H Week, which takes place annually during the first full week of October. Brown County 4-H leverages National 4-H Week to celebrate the great things that the 4-H youth development program offers young people and highlights the incredible 4-H young people who each day work to a make a positive impact on their community.
Both 4-H members and leaders will be sharing their stories in activities around the county.
4-H has been a major part of my life since I was 8 years old, as a young person, you sometimes don’t understand why you need to do something that looks like it will be a lot of extra work. It may not always be fun and now as an adult I can look back and point to numerous events throughout my 4-H years that shape me into the person I am today. Currently as a leader of our local 4-H Club I am able to provide leadership to give back to our young people, some of the basic life skills that 4-H provides to help our local community stay strong and hopefully a bright future, said Brown County 4-H Volunteer Mike Frey of Claremont.
I am a 10-year member of the Honey Bees 4-H Club. 4-H is a great experience and it has taught me to learn a lot of different areas, about myself, and to get involved in Community Service around my hometown. Throughout my years in 4-H I have shown dogs and goats. I also have done fashion review and entered many static exhibits. The most important thing I have gained through being in 4-H is how to be responsible and respectful. During 4-H, I have helped and taught younger members key skills to excel in 4-H such as, how to properly show a goat or dog, how to walk in fashion review, and skills to help them complete projects. My most memorable moment in 4-H is having Grand Champion Meat Goat at the Brown County Fair in 2012, said Brown County 4-H Member Ellen Weber of Warner, SD.
Brown County 4-H is a very active 4-H Community that does not just focus on one project area. Here are just some of the project areas that
