Dairy cattle judging provides learning opportunities for S.D. 4-H youth

BROOKINGS – Fifty-three 4-H Youth from across South Dakota participated in the State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held during the South Dakota State Fair.

Contestants had the opportunity to evaluate top dairy cattle donated by area producers and learn from industry leaders. Awards were also given to high individuals and teams thanks to sponsorship from the Midwest Dairy Association.

Top seniors also earned a trip to the 2013 World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisc., to compete in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest.

During the State Dairy Judging Contest youth were challenged. They had to complete a written skills problem, evaluated structure and dairy character on five cow and heifer classes, and gave oral reasons defending their placing decisions. The top five individuals and top three teams were recognized in each age division: beginner, junior and senior.


Top five beginner individuals: First place was Olivia Ewalt of Day County; second place was Colin Frey of Brown County; third place was Lexa Burtzlaff of Butte/Lawerence County; fourth place was Stephanie Post of Brookings County; fifth place was Elissa Oyen of Minnehaha County. Team results: First place team: Brown County, team members include; Colin Frey, Jack Achen, Joseph Achen and Jessemy Sharp. Second place team: McCook County, team members include; Ashtyn Wobig, Jaedon Wobig, Paige Peterson, and Tayah McGregor.

Top five junior individuals: first place was Nicholas Achen of Brown County; second place was Bethany Rennich of Brookings County; third place was Dylan Frey of Brown County; fourth place was Darby Knoll of Charles Mix County; fifth place was John Achen of Brown County. Team results: First place team was Brown County, team members include; John Achen, Travis Sharp, Nicholas Achen and Dylan Frey. Second place team was Grant County, team members include; Shawn Stemsrud, Tatiana Stemsrud and Sarah Jarmen. Third place team was McCook County, team members include; Nicholas Schallenkamp, Brianna Schock and Tanner Peterson.

Top five senior individuals: first place was Logan Triebwasser of Brookings County; second place was Kayla Harringa of Deuel County; third place was Dylan Frey of Brown County; fourth place was Tierra Decker of Beadle County; fifth place was Ashley Rennich of Brookings County. Team results: first place team was Deuel County, team members include; Brittany Knutson, Nicole Goens, Krista Harringa and Kayla Harringa.

South Dakota 4-Hers compete at 2013 World Dairy Expo

Four seniors from the State Contest went on to represent South Dakota 4-H at the National Contest held on Sept. 30. Team members include; Ashley Rennich from Brookings County, Tierra Decker from Beadle County, Megan Knutson from Day County and Krista Harringa from Deuel County. Coaches, Jodi Knutson, Keith Goens and Terri Goens from Deuel County, led the team.

In preparation for the contest the team had the opportunity to visit and practice at several Wisconsin dairy farms. They also toured the National Dairy Shrine and NASCO factory.
