North Dakota is home to some of the best beef in the world – not only because of its high-quality cattle, but also because of the dedicated people up and down the beef supply chain that are committed to producing a quality product and an exceptional eating experience for consumers. North Dakota was represented well in Tampa, Fla., at this year’s Cattle Industry Convention, where North Dakotans were recognized for their beef industry excellence.

Dale and Melodie Zimmerman of Bismarck, N.D., owners of Peacock Alley American Grill and Bar, were awarded the National Beef Backer Innovator of the Year Award. The Peacock Alley is known for offering impressive and unique beef dishes. They value versatility and unveil at least five new beef dishes every month. By working closely with their local supplier, they create unique beef items. Plus, since creating a new beef-focused menu, their sales have more than doubled.

North Dakota is also home to the National Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Program’s Marketer of the Year, Larry Schnell of Dickinson, N.D., owner and manager of Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange. When Schnell saw a need for improved handling and BQA practices in the livestock marketing industries, he contacted BQA Coordinator Lisa Pederson about working on an educational program to address the need. “Focal Point – An Auction Market Quality Assurance Guide” was developed based on his input and helps educate auction market employees about BQA practices and cattle handling skills. Schnell was active in the development and promotion of the program, which is now in every auction market in the United States.

The NDSA gave the Zimmermans and Schnell a home-town salute at its 84th Annual Convention & Trade Show on Saturday, Sept. 28, during the Foundation Luncheon in Bismarck, N.D.
