PIERRE — The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) partnered up with the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) to promote beef to an estimated 110,000 athletes and supporters at the 118th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21.

“As part of the $50,000 that SDBIC gave to NEBPI this year, the Boston Marathon was one of the health events sponsored in an effort to reach more health-conscious millennial consumers,” said Ron Frederick, SDBIC executive director. “This event sponsorship included support for the Team Beef participants, as well as the National Beef Ambassadors, who passed out beef sticks and recipes to attendees. Social media was also used to promote the event, making 2 million impressions online.”

Team BEEF had a great showing at this year’s event, with 13 members running in the competition, including athletes from Kansas, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and South Dakota.

Team BEEF South Dakota member Thomas Madut, from Mitchell completed the race with a time of 2:38:03 and placed 262nd out of 32,456 runners.

“Running the Boston Marathon was another incredible experience,” said Madut. “I’m very happy with how I finished, even though as runners, you’re never completely satisfied, which is why I’m already looking forward to competing again next year! Going back to Boston and running to honor those who were injured or killed in the bombing was the best way I knew how. I feel so blessed to have gotten the opportunity to not only run for the city of Boston, but to do so while representing my state of South Dakota and Team BEEF!”

Madut said the cheers he received along the route from spectators chanting, “Go Team BEEF,” and “Go South Dakota,” helped to motivate and inspire him during the race. He plans to compete in the Sioux Falls Marathon on Sept. 7, where he placed second last year.

“Madut ran a great race, and we were able to follow right along as we were live-tweeting his splits,” said Briana Burgers, SDBIC nutrition assistant, director of online communications and project manager for Team BEEF South Dakota. “He proudly wore his Team BEEF South Dakota jersey and represented us well, proving that the powerful protein and essential vitamins and minerals contained in beef can help ‘fuel the finish’ for active and healthy lifestyles, including those elite!”

Madut will continue to run for Team BEEF South Dakota through the summer months, along with 99 other members on the team.

“If you would like to help cheer on Team BEEF South Dakota, Like ‘Team BEEF South Dakota’ on Facebook for updates,” said Burgers. “And make plans to come cheer on the team at four upcoming races including: the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon/Half Marathon on June 1; the Beef & Eggs 5K, Brookings on July 12; Andy’s Road Race 5K/10K, Huron on August 30; and the Sioux Falls Marathon/Half Marathon on Sept. 7.”
