BROOKINGS — Alvaro Garcia was recently named the new SDSU Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Program Director, pending approval from the Board of Regents.

Since 2001, Garcia has served as an SDSU Extension Dairy Specialist and professor of Dairy Science in the Department of Dairy Science within the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University.

“We are excited to have Dr. Garcia join the leadership team of SDSU Extension. He has an unwavering commitment to provide research-based, unbiased and relevant information and education, while creating opportunities and empowering people,” said Barry Dunn, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences and Director of SDSU Extension. “Dr. Garcia has proven himself to be a creative, effective Extension Specialist and I am confident that his excellent leadership skills will strengthen all aspects of South Dakota agriculture.”

Garcia was asked to fill the position, previously held by Rosie Nold, when she accepted the position of Assistant Department Head and Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science. As the SDSU Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Program Director, Garcia provides statewide leadership and coordination for high impact SDSU Extension programs that address agriculture and natural resources needs of the state.

“This new role excites me because it allows me to work with a broad diversity of topics,” Garcia said. “I always thought it was important to have a more global or holistic approach when working to serve South Dakota agriculture. And now, rather than one focus, I will have several.”

In this new role, Garcia will provide guidance to SDSU Extension Specialists as they work with agriculture communities, organizations, media and private industry to strengthen the state’s agriculture industry and the people it serves. “Our team works to provide research-based, unbiased information in a timely and effective manner that will educate and empower the people and industry which make up the state’s agriculture and natural resources,” Garcia said.
