Area USDA milk production reports for May 2014

South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS – Milk production in South Dakota during May 2014 totaled 180 million pounds, up six percent from May 2013, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The average number of milk cows was 97,000 head. Milk production per cow averaged 1,855 pounds.

Minnesota

Milk production in Minnesota during May 2014 totaled 787 million pounds, down less than 1 percent from May 2013, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during May, at 460,000 head, was unchanged from last month. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,710 pounds, the third highest average since records began in 1932.

Iowa

Milk production in Iowa during May 2014 totaled 410 million pounds, up 1 percent from May 2013 and the highest total since May 1972, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during May, at 208,000 head, was 2,000 more than last month. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,970 pounds, the highest average since records started in 1960.
