New building at Sioux Empire Fair

Farm Forum

This summer, the Sioux Empire Fair in Sioux Falls is celebrating its 75th year, “Diamond Jubilee,” of providing summer fun to the community. What is different about the fair this year? A brand new activity building, the Pipestone Discovery Barn.

“The Pipestone Discovery Barn will bring agriculture to life for all Discovery Barn visitors. Most consumers have never been to a farm and certainly don’t live on a farm. This space brings the farm to them. “ explains Sylvia. Sylvia Wolters from Pipestone has been working on the project the past year. “We unfortunately live in a world that knows very little about where their food comes from. Farmers will be here showing the passion, and caring commitment they have for producing food for consumers regionally and across the world. It will be nice to bring hands on experiences to everyone.” Pipestone is dedicated to bringing transparency and factual experiences to all. Make this a “must see” location on your trip to the fair!

The 10,000 square foot Discovery Barn has areas dedicated to pigs, dairy cattle, chickens, soybeans, and corn. No matter what time you visit, there is sure to be an exciting event! At any given moment, you may witness a live cow or sow birth, bottle feed a calf, or watch baby chickens hatch. There are many interactive activities like milking a cow and feeding pigs. There are additional special activities planned for each day – Visit often! You can’t miss it, the grand entrance is a silo. Come on in and learn fun facts about corn and soybeans. Daily free samples will be served from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. “Got Milk?” Midwest Dairy Malt Shop is also part of the new development, open for purchase of delicious dairy products.

The Pipestone Discovery Barn will offer a fun, educational experience to daycares, teenagers, and adults alike. The Sioux Empire Fair runs from Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 10. The Discovery Barn will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
