USDA announces funding to rural South Dakota communities

Huron – U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development State Director Elsie Meeks recently announced the award of loans and grants to 23 recipients that will assist them to spur economic development and improve services to several South Dakota communities.

“USDA Rural Development provides resources to assist small communities with maintaining and improving their quality of life,” said Meeks. “These investments will contribute to their respective local economies, create and retain employment, and improve services to rural South Dakotans.”

Funding of each loan and/or grant is contingent upon the recipient meeting the conditions of the agreement. The recipients are:

Community Facility Program

• Faulkton Area Medical Center, Faulkton – $2,950,000 loan for expansion and renovation. The project will allow for additional care in cancer treatment and outreach clinics which will provide specialized care such as gynecology and mental health.

• Cheyenne River Youth Project, Inc., Eagle Butte – $15,000 grant to purchase equipment for preservation and distribution of locally grown foods.

• West McPherson EMS, Inc., Eureka, SD – $18,000 grant to purchase ambulance equipment.

• McLaughlin Fire District, McLaughlin – $20,000 grant and a $6,280 Economic Impact Initiative grant to purchase a cab/chassis for a Wildland fire truck.

• Red Cloud Indian School, Inc., Pine Ridge – $30,000 loan and a $25,000 grant to purchase a school bus.

• Red Cloud Indian School, Inc., Pine Ridge – $8,900 Economic Impact Initiative grant to purchase cafeteria tables for the lunchroom and for the replacement of video projectors.

• City of Leola, Leola – $6,500 Economic Impact Initiative grant to purchase equipment. This project will purchase automated external defibrillators (AED’s) and a portable radio system for the police department.

• City of Hoven, Hoven – $10,360 Economic Impact Initiative Grant to purchase extrication equipment for the fire department. A Jaws of Life unit will be purchased.

• McIntosh Volunteer Fire Department, McIntosh – $20,960 Economic Impact Initiative grant to purchase a new fire truck.

• Dupree Volunteer Fire Department, Dupree – $10,540 Economic Impact Initiative grant to purchase equipment.

• Town of Ashton, Ashton – $70,000 Community Facility Direct loan to replace an old cistern.

Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program

• Wagner Area Growth, Inc., Wagner – $50,000 grant to establish a revolving loan fund to assist small and emerging businesses.

• Onida Area Development Corporation, Onida – $60,000 grant to establish a revolving loan fund to assist new and existing small businesses in the area.

• Brookings Economic Development Corporation, Brookings – $40,000 to furnish fixtures in the Technology Commercialization Center and to provide technical assistance to small and emerging businesses.

Water and Waste Program

• Southern Black Hills Water System, Inc., Hot Springs, – $825,000 grant for extending the water line to provide water to additional users from the existing rural water system.

• Bear Butte Valley Water, Inc., Sturgis – $200,000 loan and a $2,527,000 grant for additional costs in the construction of the water distribution system.

• City of Clear Lake, Clear Lake – $2,056,000 loan and a $308,000 grant to make improvements to the sanitary sewer system. This project will reline the clay pipes with a cured in place process which allows pushing a liner into existing pipes without digging the clay pipes up.

• City of Box Elder, Box Elder – $3,472,000 loan for drilling a well, adding a water storage tank, and additional distribution lines to address the need for the rapidly growing area.

• Town of South Shore, South Shore – $784,000 loan and a $440,000 grant for cleaning and televising the existing collection system, relining and replacing collection pipes. The treatment ponds will be updated with synthetic liners.

• Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Housing, Pine Ridge – $30,000 Special Evaluation Assistance for Rural Communities and Households (SEARCH) grant to provide an evaluation of the sewer collection system and treatment lagoon to determine a proper course of action to correct system deficiencies and provide a system to better serve the residents of Red Shirt.

• City of Dupree, Dupree – $29,960 Special Evaluation Assistance for Rural Communities and Households (SEARCH) grant to do a storm drainage study.

Business and Industry Program

• Advanced Aluminum Structures, Inc., Sturgis – $493,000 guaranteed loan to construct a new facility in the Sturgis Industrial Park.

• Coyle Properties, LLC, Belle Fourche – $356,826 guaranteed loan to purchase and reconstruct three buildings for multi-family housing, commercial rental, shop, and offices.
