Learn more about floral arranging with garden flowers at McCrory Gardens
BROOKINGS, S.D. – McCrory Gardens announces another educational program, “Floral Arranging with Your Own Garden Flowers” with Kim James, Instructor of Horticulture at SDSU. The program will be held on Thursday, July 17, at McCrory Gardens, starting at 6:30 PM. This event is part of McCrory Gardens Third Thursday series. It is free and open to the public.
“Kim loves working with flowers and getting her students excited about floriculture,” said David Graper, SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist and Director of McCrory Gardens.
James teaches several Horticulture courses at South Dakota State University and is the Advisor of the Horticulture Club. She has taught workshops on doing floral design and floral judging.
During the Third Thursday workshop, James will take the group out to the gardens to collect some materials to create a demonstration arrangement. If there is enough interest, we may do a make-and-take workshop in the future.
“We certainly have a lot more flowers to work with here at McCrory Gardens than the typical home garden, especially if you just focus on the ones that have the beautiful blooms, but there are likely a plethora of overlooked plants that can be used to make arrangements,” said James.
During the course she will also discuss basic design components and methods for keeping arrangements looking good longer.
To attend, meet at the Education and Visitor Center at McCrory Gardens, 631 22nd Ave. in Brookings, at 6:30 p.m. on July 17.
