Registration open for 2014 Ag and Food Institute Teacher Workshop
BROOKINGS — SDSU Extension and South Dakota Ag in the Classroom are co-hosting the 2014 Ag and Food Institute July 29-30. The two-day training in Sioux Falls will share lessons and information related to agriculture, food production and gardening for those involved in educating youth.
The program is geared toward upper elementary and middle school teachers and educators. The cost is $45 per person. Graduate credit is available through the University of Sioux Falls for an additional $45. Attendance at both training days is required and homework assignments must be completed to receive this credit.
Topics include soils, responsible pesticide usage in production ag, conservation measures and rainfall simulator demonstration, pizza and salad gardens, vermicomposting (worm), school garden entrepreneurship, simple machines and poultry farming.
The second day of the program will include three field trips to the Sioux Falls landfill to observe their composting system, the Baltic School Community Garden and Cottonwood Ridge Dairy.
The program will be held at the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Sioux Falls, 2001 E. 8th St. The program runs July 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT and July 30 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT.
