LATI Agriculture program receives honors at SDAAE conference

WATERTOWN — The Lake Area Technical Institute Agriculture program was named the 2014 Outstanding Post-Secondary/Adult Agricultural Education Program by the National Association of Agricultural Educators at the annual South Dakota Association of Agricultural Educators (SDAAE) conference in Mitchell in July. The conference was held in conjunction with the South Dakota Association of Career and Technical Education conference.

The Outstanding Post-Secondary/Adult Agricultural Education Program award recognizes excellence in post-secondary and adult agricultural education programs. Applicants are judged on a variety of criteria, including teaching philosophy, effective classroom and experiential instruction, development of partnerships, and professional growth.

LATI’s Agriculture program offers students 10 options within the program including Agri-Aviation, Agri-Business, Agri-Production, Commodity Merchandising, Dairy, Environmental, Equine Management, Large Animal, Precision Technology, and Ranch Management. The options are available on-campus in the newly constructed Ag and Environmental Center or online. It is the largest program on campus with nearly 300 students enrolled.

The NAAE Outstanding Postsecondary/Adult Ag Ed Program award is sponsored by Toyota as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. NAAE is the professional organization in the United States for agricultural educators. It provides its nearly 8,000 members with professional networking and development opportunities, professional liability coverage, and extensive awards and recognition programs. The mission of NAAE is “professionals providing agricultural education for the global community through visionary leadership, advocacy and service.” The NAAE headquarters are in Lexington, Ky.
