BROOKINGS — The South Dakota Sheep Growers Association annual convention is held in Brookings Sept. 26-27, 2014 at the Days Inn Convention Center.

The convention begins Sept. 26 with a bus tour to a local lamb-to-finish operation that focuses on sheep health and grazing management.

Following the tour, attendees can attend sessions back on the campus of South Dakota State University. Sessions include a complete “Lamb Fabrication” workshop in the SDSU Meat Lab or four mini-sessions held within the SDSU Animal Science Arena.

Those interested in attending the Lamb Fabrication workshop need to send in their registration form soon as class space is limited to the first 50 people who sign up.

During the evening of Sept. 26 the Experience Lamb social will be held at the McCrory Gardens Visitor Center (631 22nd Ave, Brookings, SD 57006). Area chefs will prepare lamb samples for guests to enjoy.

Friday’s registration fee covers the ticket for the social.

Sept. 27 features a full lineup of seminars and activities featuring speakers from the sheep industry, academia, and sheep organizations.

Throughout the day, there is a Fleece-to-Shawl contest, wool activities for the kids (and grown-ups), the South Dakota Make It With Wool Finals.

A bonus tour to a second sheep operation is scheduled for the morning of Sept. 28. This operation has a unique production goal which provides growers with a new way to look at sheep production.

If you are not a current member of the South Dakota SheepGrowers Association your registration fee for Sept. 26 is waived and you can receive a discounted one-year trial membership.

For a registration form, e-mail Patty DeZeeuw at sdsheepgrowers@yahoo.com. Once it is complete, mail it to Patty DeZeeuw, 21315 US Hwy 14, Elkton, SD 57026 or e-mail it to sdsheepgrowers@yahoo.com.

Complete schedules and maps will be sent out in early September to everyone who pre-registers.

Pre-registration is encouraged to be completed by September 6. Registration fee is $10 each day for an individual or $25 each day for a family. Sunday’s tour is free.
