How many employees will you have? The company grew out of Dakota Ag Supply in Leola with Nathan Hoffman as owner. That company provides seed, fertilizer and agronomy services. Office manager for both locations is Sondra Waltman. Inventory manager is Jeff Mueller for both places.
The livestock division opened in Aberdeen this spring. At Dakota Livestock Supply, Jordan Holt is the general manager. He grew up west of Aberdeen on a diversified livestock and farming operation. He was very active in showing cattle and still does. Matt Peckham is the store manager.
Who will be your main customers? DLS aims to be the livestock feed and animal health source for farmers and ranchers.
What do you consider your trade area? Up to 100 miles around Aberdeen.
What products do you have? Hubbard Feeds and Crystalyx Brand supplements, Show Rite, Ralco Show, Kent Show Feeds and Z Tags. A full line of animal health products from: Zoetis, Boerhringer Ingelheim, VitaFerm, Merck Animal Health, Novartis, Bayer. The company offers the largest selection of Sullivan Show supplies in the area. They have a large collection of electric fence supplies and livestock ear tags.
What experience do you have? Jordan has been involved with livestock ag his entire life. He’s been an ag retailer for the last 6 years.
Do you have specialized services that you’ll be able to offer customers? Customized feed rations; they have protein lick tubs and offer all classes of customized minerals through Hubbard. Delivery is available for bulk and bagged products. Through Hubbard, there is a Feeder Finance program, which is able to offer customers financing for feed, which offers competitive terms and rates.
For which animals do you provide products? Cattle, sheep, hogs, horses, goats, small animals, dogs and cats.
Special feature: The company has a show trailer that they take to 4 or 5 events such as the Brown County Fair, S.D. State Fair, and livestock shows where they offer the products for sale for participants.
Community support: The company is a supporter of 4-H and FFA programs. Along with Hubbard Feeds, they are a major sponsor of the S.D. Summer Spotlight show held in Huron. They also sponsor the Supreme Bull and Supreme Female at the South Dakota State Fair.
Jordan says this is a great trade area with a definite need for these services. The company encompasses all facets of animal agriculture. Jordan is a firm believer that proper nutrition and good animal health are key to making a livestock operation as profitable as it can be and that will keep it running smoothly.
