NDSU offers beef cattle winter management workshops
Beef cattle producers will have an opportunity in November to learn more about winter management options for their livestock.
The North Dakota State University Extension Service is hosting a Beef Cattle Winter Management workshop at four locations:
• Nov. 12 – Fireside Restaurant, Ellendale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central time
• Nov. 12 – American Legion, Medina, 4 to 9 p.m. Central time
• Nov. 13 – Wing Theater, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central time
• Nov. 13 – Fairgrounds, Carson, 3 to 8 p.m. Mountain time
Topics that will be covered and the presenters are:
• What does colostrum have to do with stewardship? Building cow colostrum quality during winter feeding for healthier spring calves – Gerald Stokka, NDSU Extension livestock stewardship specialist and veterinarian
• Alternative winter feeding strategies – Mary Berg, area Extension livestock environmental management specialist, NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center
• Shelterbelts as living windbreaks – Craig Stange, Natural Resources Conservation Service
• Body condition scoring for cow herds – county Extension agents
• Feeding for energy – Chanda Engel, research specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
• Water management – Karl Hoppe, area Extension livestock systems specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
• Vaccine handling and storage – Lisa Pederson, NDSU Extension beef quality specialist, Bismarck
• Hay bale management – Fara Brummer, area Extension livestock systems specialist, NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center
The registration fee is $15 per person if paid by Nov. 1 or $25 per person after that date. The cost for beef quality assurance certification or recertification is an additional $15 per operation. Four American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) continuing education credits are available.
