SDSU Extension hosts regional youth dairy cattle judging schools

BROOKINGS — SDSU Extension hosts Regional youth Dairy Cattle Judging Schools throughout the state beginning May 27, 2015 for youth looking to sharpen their skills in Dairy Judging.

Participants at these schools will learn to identify basic dairy cattle parts and correct structure, evaluate and rank cattle based on the Dairy Cow Unified Scorecard and will learn skills used such as decision making, note taking and delivering oral reasons, explained, Tracey Erickson, SDSU Extension Dairy Field Specialist.

Erickson will lead the educational sessions.

May 27: School will be held at 6 p.m. at Frey View Dairy (41161 115th St. Claremont) Driving Directions: From Claremont go 2 miles north, 1 mile east 1 mile north and half mile east.

June 4: School will be held at 1:45 p.m. at Central Plains Holstein Show-Dairy Fest at the Swiftel Center (824 32nd ave, Brookings) Driving Directions: Take exit 132 off of I-29, go east to 32nd Ave, then 1 Block north on 32nd avenue. Located on the north end of the Swiftel Arena.

June 16: School will be held at 1 p.m. at Loren & Jackie Sprik’s dairy (27984 372nd Ave., Geddes) Driving Directions: 4 miles south on Hwy 44/50 junction and 2 miles west on north side of road. Whisper -N-Creek Dairy Goats will also provide two classes of dairy goats to judge. Prizes will be awarded to judgers.

June 23: School will be held at 1 p.m. at William & RayNelle Mueller’s Silver Crest Dairy Farm (14652 486th Avenue, Big Stone City) Driving Directions: From the Junction of U.S. Hwy 12 and 15 in Milbank, go east 8.3 miles on U.S. Hwy 12, then south (right) on 485th Ave. 0.5 miles, then 1 mile east (left) on 146th St., then south (right) 0.7 mile on 486th Ave.

July 22: School will be held at 6 p.m. at Fieber Dairy, Inc. Chris Fieber (135 South Bowdoin Street, Goodwin) Driving Directions: from the junction of I-29 and Hwy 212, go east 10.5 miles to county road 312 (Goodwin corner) go 1 mile south to Goodwin. At first four way stop sign, continue south 3 blocks (Fieber Dairy is on the South west edge of Goodwin)

July 28: School will be held at 10 a.m. at Kevin & Suzanne Souza’s Victory Farms 48176 153rd St. Milbank Driving Directions: From the junction of Hwy 15 & 12, go 4 miles south to 153rd street, then 3 and one half miles east on 153rd, north side of road-Victory Farms Main Dairy.
