NCR-SARE announces 2015 Youth Educator grants
The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) Program is pleased to announce the projects recommended for funding for the Youth Educator competitive grant program.
For the 2015 Youth Educator Grant Program, NCR-SARE awarded more than $25,000 to 15 projects. The Youth Educator Grant Program supports educators who seek to provide programming on sustainable agriculture for youth. Those selected to receive funding included (in order by state):
• Mike Severino in West Branch, IA was awarded $1,991 for the project, “Erosion Control and Pollinator Habitat through Perennial plantings on Scattergood Friends School Farm.”
• Bryan Bennett of Casey-Westfield JSHS in Casey, IL was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Hands-on Sustainable Agriculture Using Chestnuts and Hazelnuts.”
• Tod Satterthwaite of Sola Gratia Farm in Urbana, IL was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Building Community and Growing Food with the Next Generation.”
• Daniel Hissong of Oskaloosa Junior/Senior High School in Oskaloosa, KS was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Oskaloosa Community Garden.”
• Lacey Ingrao of Allen Neighborhood Center in Lansing, MI was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Eastside Youth Service Corps: Expanding the Edible Hunter Park, Increasing Food Security, Promoting Sustainable Agriculture and Fostering Food Entrepreneurism.”
• Laura Hedeen of Minnesota Food Association in Marine on St Croix, MN was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Big River Farms Youth & Family Engagement Program – a Project of the Minnesota Food Association.”
• Daniel Roth of One Garden Inc. in Brixey, MO was awarded $1,992 for the project, “Engaging Youth in Sustainable Agriculture through Hands-on Experience.”
• Rachel Levi of EarthDance in Ferguson, MO was awarded $1,992 for the project, “Junior Farm Crew.”
• Cait Caughey of The Big Garden in Omaha, NE was awarded $2,000 for the project, “The Big Garden Children & Youth Sustainable Agriculture Curriculum.”
• Ben Mcshane-Jewell of Community Crops in Lincoln, NE was awarded $1,409 for the project, “Youth Mobile Library.”
• Alisha Conway of Famicos Foundation in Cleveland, OH was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Healthy Growing, Healthy Eating: Youth gardening program.”
• L. Grace Freeman RN of Irene-Wakonda Elementary School in Vermillion, SD was awarded $1,342 for the project, “Sustainable Agriculture Using All Five Senses.”
• Doug and Carol Pavel of Butte Vista Farm in Whitewood, SD was awarded $1,000 for the project, “Producer-Lead, Multi-topic, Hands-on Informational Seminar to Educate Youth about Sustainable and Profitable Meat Goat Production.”
• Sunny Knutson of Riveredge Nature Center in Newburg, WI was awarded $2,000 for the project, “Sustainable Agriculture Summer Camp at Riveredge Nature Center.”
