SDSU dairy plant and local farm open doors to community
BROOKINGS, SD – South Dakota Farm Families will be hosting two dairy tours on Saturday, June 6 in conjunction with Brookings Dairy Fest. Participants will get the unique opportunity to take a look inside South Dakota State University’s dairy processing plant and visit Hilltop Dairy east of Brookings.
The bus tours will leave from the Swiftel Center parking lot at 9:00am and 10:30am. All ages are welcome on the tours. The tours are held in conjunction with Dairy Fest, a festival celebrating June Dairy Month. Each tour provides participants the chance to see how dairy products are produced, from beginning to end. Additionally, tour participants will sample SDSU ice cream, and each participating family will receive a gift card for a free gallon of milk.
“We are excited to share how our favorite dairy products get from the cow to you,” said Rebecca Christman, Outreach Director for Ag United / South Dakota Farm Families. “It is a great opportunity for people to see how committed dairy farmers are to providing the best possible care for their cows, and how dairy processors are producing the best possible product for the consumers.”
The dairy tours are part of the second annual Brookings Dairy Fest, held June 5th and 6th. Dairy Fest celebrates the South Dakota dairy industry, which generates $427 million in milk sales annually.
