HURON, S.D. – Sew it. Grow it. Show it. Create it. Enter it! The Women’s Building has two fun competitions for South Dakotans to show their skills at.

Let the cupcake wars begin! The Cupcake Creations Contest is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3 from 12 pm – 2 pm at the Women’s Building Kitchen. Bring your crafty ideas and decorations to compete for prizes. One dozen cupcakes will be provided, but you will need to bring the tools and decorations needed to create your cupcakes. A $25 gift basket will be awarded to first place winner and a $10 gift to second place. Entry forms must be submitted by July 31 and can be found in the Women’s Building Premium Book. This contest is open to all ages!

Homemade wine makers, there is a contest for you, too. The Open Class Homemade Wine Competition is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 7 from 1 pm – 3 pm at the Women’s Building Kitchen. This is the perfect opportunity to see how your homemade wine stacks up against others. Divisions are 1) Red Wine, 2) White Wine and 3) My Own Creation Wine. Exhibitors may enter one or all divisions. A SD State Fair Wine Pavilion $20 gift certificate will be awarded to first place winners and a wine gift basket will go to second place winners. Entry forms must be submitted by July 31 and can be found in the Women’s Building Premium Book. Must be 21 to enter.

In addition to the two special contests, other entries for the Women’s Building, Arts and Education Building and Horticulture Building are being sought. Photography, garden items, upcycled items, table and place settings, canned goods, etc. can all be entered as static exhibits. With the Pinterest craze, there should be no shortage of ideas! All ages are encouraged to participate; in some cases, there are junior and senior divisions.

Premium books for these buildings are available online at www.sdstatefair.com. Registration deadline is July 31. Literature deadline is July 17.
