Cover Crop Learning Tour – Interseeding into row crops, September 15th

Farm Forum

Mark your calendars for the “Cover Crop Learning Tour – Interseeding into Row Crops” to be held south of Lakefield on September 15. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour research and demonstration plots, learn about the latest cover crop research in row crops, hear from farmers currently planting cover crops, and see interseeding equipment in action. Registration will begin at 8:30 and the program will run from 9:00 to 2:30.

The morning sessions will include a tour of cover crop establishment research plots and discussion of research trials being conducted in Minnesota by the “Take Cover!” team and Dr. M. Scott Wells, U of MN Extension Forage and Cropping Systems Specialist. Jerry and Nancy Ackermann, Dave Christoffer, Jerry Perkins, and Darwin Roberts will discuss their experiences in seeding cover crops on their farms, while Jan Voit of the Heron Lake Watershed District and Loren Clarke, District Conservationist with the USDA-NRCS, will discuss programs available for producers to try cover crops.

Stephanie McLain, District Conservationist with the USDA-NRCS, and Dr. Axel Garcia, Cropping Systems Specialist at the SWROC in Lamberton, will lead hands-on soil health evaluations and demonstrations in the field. Jill Sackett and Liz Stahl, Extension Educators with U of MN Extension, will lead plot tours examining various cover crops and seeding timings in corn and soybean. Herbicide considerations when planting cover crops will also be discussed.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to walk through a living cover crop “seed catalog” and view interseeding equipment in action. Seeding equipment will include the Pennsylvania State Interseeder, a high-clearance drill, and a prototype high-clearance seeder. Other equipment demonstrated will include a PTO rotary zone tiller and a strip-tillage machine.

This project was made possible by support from the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Service, Heron Lake Watershed District, USDA-Agriculture Research Service, and University of MN Extension.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged and required to guarantee a meal. The fee to attend is $10 if pre-registered, or $20 at the door (with no guarantee of a meal). Online registration is available at:
