4-H State Livestock Judging Contest set for Sept. 19

BROOKINGS — South Dakota State University and SDSU Extension will host the South Dakota State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest Sept. 19, 2015.

Please find the schedule of events for contest day and the workout prior below.

A pre-contest workout will be hosted on Friday, September 18, 2015, at the SDSU Animal Science Arena for those who would like extra practice and are able to attend.

“Since we buy a large number of steers, sheep and hogs from the S.D. State Fair each year for use within the Animal Science Department, we will have a number of livestock [not being used for the contest] available for youth to practice on,” said Josh Cribbs, Collegiate Livestock Judging Coach and Instructor, Animal Science Dept.

There will be two beef classes, two sheep classes and two swine classes available for practice.

Sept. 18, 2015

5 p.m. Workout for all participants, held in the Animal Science Arena

6-8 p.m. Light meal, sponsored by SDSU Animal Science Department, available in the Animal Science Arena

9 p.m. All participants and coaches must be off University property

Sept. 19, 2015

Beginners

10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Registration in the Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126

10:45 a.m. – 11 a.m. Orientation in the Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126

11 a.m. Beginners Judging Contest held in the Animal Science Arena

Parts identification for beginner participants will follow the conclusion of judging classes and will be held in the Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126.

12:15 p.m. Conclusion of beginner contest

12:30 p.m. Lunch sponsored by various organizations, including State 4-H Leaders; held in the Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126

Juniors and Seniors

Noon – 1 p.m. Registration and Lunch in the Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126

1 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. Orientation held in Animal Science Arena

1:20 p.m. Junior and Senior Livestock Judging Contest held in the Animal Science Arena

2:45 p.m. Reasons for Junior and Senior judges in Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126 and Animal Science Arena

4:30 p.m. Conclusion of Junior and Senior contest

4:45 p.m. Ice Cream Social and Awards presentation held in the Animal Science Complex, Classroom 126

University Tour Opportunities

With the 4-H State Livestock Judging Contest being held in Brookings on the campus of South Dakota State University, there will be tour opportunities for students and parents interested in learning more about the growth and opportunities within the SDSU Animal Science department and other areas of campus.

Faculty workshops/talks and unit tours will run from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. These will be focused for the beginner aged 4-Hers, since they will have completed their contest, and include:

• Nutrition, presented by Dr. Robbi Pritchard (1:30 p.m)

• Horse Unit Tour (2:00 p.m.)

• Dairy Processing Tour (tentative)

• 4-H Skillathon example contest (available 2 – 4 p.m)
