Market coming to downtown area of Yankton this year
YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — A market is coming to the downtown area of Yankton this year.
The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan (http://bit.ly/1T8Btkr ) reports Market at the Meridian will take place Saturday mornings from May to October, with it acting as a farmers market. The first market is set to take place May 7.
Organizer Cathy Clatworthy said the idea came while developing the Harvest Halloween Festival.
“We had vendors and a farmers market that first year and we thought we should develop a permanent farmers market,” she said.
Clatworthy is recruiting vendors for the market, and has recruited musicians to play when the market is open. Volunteers are needed, she said.
“Once the vendors get going and are consistent, they will get excited and the public will get excited, too,” she said. “It goes hand in hand.”
The market might be open Saturday evenings for vendors who can’t be there for mornings, Clatworthy said.
Clatworthy is grateful for being able to have the location near the Meridian Bridge.
“The heart of Yankton is our downtown,” she said. “In conjunction with that is the historic and iconic Meridian Bridge. That’s why our logo has the bridge in it. It’s very memorable.”
Clatworthy hopes vendors and the downtown area will benefit from the market.
“We would like it to be a social gathering for the community,” she said. “We want it to be an opportunity for small-scale agriculture and specialty vendors. It will be a good opportunity for small businesses.”
