PIERRE, S.D – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed a proclamation declaring May as “Beef Month” once again this year in South Dakota.

South Dakota has nearly five cattle for every one person in the state. Nationally, South Dakota ranks fifth for the size of the calf crop and number of beef cows.

“South Dakota is home to over 15,000 cattle producers who strive to provide a safe, wholesome product for consumers,” said Gov. Daugaard. “They strive to produce a healthy and nutritious protein source for consumers within our state, but also to the global marketplace.”

“Recognizing May as Beef Month is a great way to acknowledge all the hard work and dedication of South Dakota’s beef producers,” said interim Secretary of Agriculture Dr. Dustin Oedekoven. “Our producers continue to meet the challenges of a changing industry while raising their cattle herds using methods that are environmentally conscious.”

South Dakota also ranks seventh nationally for total herd size, at 3.95 million head, and cattle on feed with a total of 435,000 head.
