SDSU Extension hosts dairy cattle judging schools for youth throughout South Dakota
BROOKINGS, S.D. – SDSU Extension hosts several Dairy Cattle Judging Schools throughout South Dakota free to youth.
“These schools are a great way for youth to gain experience and lifelong decision making skills,” explained Tracey Erickson, SDSU Extension Dairy Field Specialist.
During these schools beginners and first time judges will gain understanding & develop skills in the following:
• Identifying basic cattle body parts and correct structure.
• Taking organized notes to defend their decisions.
• Properly delivering a set of oral reasons.
• Evaluating and ranking cattle based on the Dairy Cow Unified Scorecard.
More experienced judgers will expand their knowledge and practice of the following:
• Identifying correct dairy cattle breed standards.
• Dairy Cattle Selection through performance and pedigree evaluation.
• Delivering oral sets of reasons utilizing proper note taking techniques.
Claremont, S.D. on May 25 beginning at 6 p.m. at Frey View Dairy Farm hosted by Mike and Sara Frey (41161 115th St. Claremont). Driving Directions: from Claremont, SD go 2miles north, 1 mile east, 1 mile north and ½ mile east. Farm is on south side of road.
Watertown, S.D. on May 26 beginning at 9 a.m. at SVP Farm hosted by Steve and Vonda Ponto (17832 461st Ave. Watertown, SD 57201). Driving Directions: 1. From the Watertown I-29 Exit ramp on the east side of Watertown go east to first intersection, then south to stop sign, then east one mile, then south 2 miles to 178th Street then east 2 miles, then south 1/8 mile. Farm is on East side of road. SVP Farm sign there. Or from the I-29 Clear Lake Castlewood Exit: Exit ramp and go west to 461st avenue then go 4 3/4 miles north. Big Stone City, S.D. on June 14 beginning at 1 p.m. at SilverCrest Dairy Farm hosted by William and RayNelle Mueller (14652 486th Avenue; Big Stone City, SD). Driving Directions: From the Junction of US Hwy 12 & 15 in Milbank, go east 8.3 miles on US Hwy 12, then south (right) on 485th Ave. 0.5 miles, then 1 mile east (left) on 146th St., then south (right) 0.7 mile on 486th Ave.
Baltic, S.D. on June 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Boadwine Farms, Inc. hosted by owner, Lynn Boadwine and Dairy Herd Manager, Heidi Selken (46945 251st St. Baltic, SD). Driving Directions: I-29 take Exit 94 (Baltic) go 1 and 1/2 mile west to water tower, then 1 mile south on 470th avenue, then 1/2 mile west on 251st street, farm on south side of road, use last driveway.
Goodwin, S.D. on July 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Fieber Dairy, Inc. hosted by Mike and Chris Fieber and Family (135 South Bowdoin Street, Goodwin, SD). Driving Directions: from the junction of I-29 and Hwy 212, go east 10.5 miles to county road 312 (Goodwin corner) go 1 mile south to Goodwin. At first four way stop sign, continue south 3 blocks (Fieber Dairy is on the South west edge of Goodwin, SD).
Milbank, S.D. on July 21 beginning at 1 p.m. at Victory Farms hosted by Kevin and Suzanne Souza (15987 480th Ave., Milbank, SD). Driving Directions: From the Junction of Hwy 15 & 12, go 11 miles south turn left on 160th street, then 2 miles east on 153rd, north side of road Victory Farms NEW dairy. Or from Highway 212 & Hwy 15 go 9 miles north, turn right on 160th Street, go east 2 miles, NEW dairy on north side of road.
Brookings, S.D. on July 26 beginning at 6 p.m. on the SDSU Dairy Farm hosted by the SDSU Dairy Science Department (3219 Medary Avenue, Brookings, SD). Driving Directions: I-29 & Hwy 14 by-pass exit 133, go west 1 mile. Take 471st ave. / Medary Avenue north (Old Hwy 77) go approximately 1.25 miles, dairy is on the west side of road.
