Crop tours highlight Carrington Research Extension Center Field Day
The North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center’s annual field day will be Tuesday, July 19.
“This is our premier summer event to showcase the center’s research program,” says Greg Endres, area Extension agronomist at the center.
Two crop tours will be conducted during the event for participants to view research trials and receive current production information. Crop variety performance and production management, and crop pest and plant nutrition/soil management will be highlighted.
The morning tour will begin at 9:30. NDSU plant breeders will review spring and durum wheat, barley, field pea, soybean and dry bean cultivars. Also, Endres and Extension agronomist Joel Ransom will discuss the status of corn and soybeans and end-of-season management.
Following a noon lunch, tour participants can attend a second crop tour starting at 1 p.m. that will be conducted by CREC researchers in two areas. Speakers and topics for those areas are:
Crop pest management
• Michael Wunsch, plant pathologist, and Michael Schaefer, research specialist – research updates on managing white mold (sclerotinia) in soybeans (impact of row spacing and plant population) and dry beans (improving fungicide deposition in lower canopy)
• Mike Ostlie, research agronomist, and Endres – highlights of the center’s weed management project
Plant nutrition and soil management
• Paulo Flores, nutrient management specialist, and other researchers – unmanned aerial systems used at the center, how the flight data is being used to supplement conventional research information and potential application for crop management
• Jasper Teboh, soil scientist – phosphorus research at the center
• Ostlie – research relating to crop management on variable topography
In addition to the agronomy tours, field day visitors will have the opportunity to attend fruit, livestock and sustainable agriculture tours.
