Organic field day set for July 28 near Madison

Northern Plains Sustainable Ag is hosting an organic field day at Johnson Farms near Madison, S.D. The event will be held on July 28 with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

The Johnson’s, Charlie, Allan, Kevin, Aaron and Jordan will share the history and development of over 40 years of organic farming. They will also cover the process of bringing future generations into farming. Aaron, Kevin and Jordan Johnson will describe what it means getting into land stewardship as a beginning farmer.

Participants will tour 2,500 acres farmed by Charlie, Allan, Kevin, and Jordan and 560 acres farmed by Aaron Johnson.

The tour will feature fields of organic small grains, forages, corn and soybeans. Participants will learn how the Johnson family manages soil fertility, weeds and pests using practical organic approaches to consistently produce high-quality and high-value crops. Equipment, seed varieties and rotations will be discussed.

The tour will be followed by lunch at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
