Volga Farm Summer Tour will be held July 27

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The annual Volga Farm Tour will be held July 27 at 4:30 p.m. and run till dusk.

The tour is located 1.5 miles south of Volga on Brookings county road 5 on the east side of road.

Tours will run continuously throughout the event. Each tour will last about an hour. The day will include a meal provided by our sponsors, which include: South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, South Dakota Wheat Commission and South Dakota Soybeans Research and Promotion council.

During the July 27, 2016 Volga Farm event, three tours will be held.

Tour 1: Weed management

The Weed Management tour will feature Paul O. Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Science Coordinator. Johnson will present on how pre-emergent herbicides worked this year and discuss weed management strategies that work in glyphosate resistant situations.

Tour 2: Crop production

The Crop Production tour will feature Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist, Jon Kleinjan, SDSU Extension Crop Production Associate and David Karki, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist. They will discuss soil fertility, agronomy and cover crops. Howard Woodard, Professor, SDSU Plant Science Department. Woodard will discuss nutrient recycling in crop production systems. Graig Reicks, Research Associate; will discuss on farm research.

Tour 3: Pest management

The Pest Management tour will feature Adam Varenhorst, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Field Crop Entomologist. Varenhorst will discuss scouting methods for insect pests in corn and soybeans. Febina Mathew, Assistant Professor in SDSU Plant Science Dept. will speak on efficacy of commercial seed treatment fungicides on soybeans. Emmanuel Byamukama, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Plant Pathologist, will discuss what has weather to do with plant diseases.

Between tours, growers visit with Connie Tande, SDSU Extension Diagnostician about plant sample issues and identification of pests or field problems.
