BROOKINGS, S.D. – To get more South Dakotans moving, SDSU Extension is proud to promote the recently launched Walking Campaign from the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH).

“This campaign in very timely, as the Surgeon General recently released a Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities,” said Nikki Prosch, SDSU Extension Health & Physical Activity Field Specialist. “It also helps promote meeting the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines.”

“Walking is a great way for individuals of all ages and abilities to increase physical activity, it’s easy and requires no equipment,” Prosch said. “Walk you dog, walk over lunch, walk to run errands, whatever it might be just walk more.”

The campaign emphasizes walking as the single most recommended form of exercise.

Prosch referenced data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System which shows walking is the most reported form of physical activity for 39 percent of South Dakotans and the second most-reported activity for another 10 percent of South Dakotans.
