Cheese sculpting demonstration coming to the S.D. State Fair

Huron, SD – While common to many fairs across the Midwest, cheese sculpting is making its debut at the South Dakota State Fair this year. Huron area artist Doug Dutenhoffer will be the featured sculptor on Friday, Sept. 2, and Saturday, Sept. 3. Roger Scheibe with the Midwest Dairy Association will be the featured sculptor on Sunday, Sept. 4.

Dutenhoffer will sculpt wheels of cheese following a fair theme, while Scheibe will follow a “Dairy 3 for Me” theme. Scheibe will also have a block of cheese available for anyone that wants to carve alongside of him on Sunday. Sculptures will be on display through Monday at noon.

“Since South Dakota is known nationwide for its cheese production and processing plants, it is only fitting that we start a tradition to recognize the state’s cheese industry with a little cheese carving exhibition,” says Scheibe. “’Dairy 3 for Me’ is a campaign established by SD dairy farmers to recognize the vital role that dairy plays as part of a healthy and well-balanced diet. So stop in and pledge your commitment to getting your three recommended servings of dairy every day.”

The cheese sculpting will be located in the Dakota Marketplace building and is sponsored by Midwest Dairy and your local SD dairy producers. In addition to the cheese sculpting, SD Dairy Princess Carrie Weaver from Bancroft will be doing a “Dairy 3 for Me” selfie station.

The 2016 South Dakota State Fair will run from Thursday, Sept. 1, through Monday, Sept. 5. Channel Seeds Preview night will be Wednesday, Aug. 31. This year’s theme is “Thrills, Squeals and Ferris Wheels.” For more information on State Fair events, contact the Fair office at 800-529-0900, visit or find them on Facebook or Twitter.
