Milbank FFA Chapter

The Milbank FFA Chapter had three FFA teams and two FFA members that participated at the South Dakota State FFA Leadership Development event on December 3-4. The Agriculture Issue Team placed 4th with their presentation, “Curley Leaf Pondweed-Friend or Foe.” The team was made of Milbank FFA members of Sara Capp, Kellie Christians, Heidi Capp, Rhianna Folk, Stewart Loehrer, Jackson McFaden and Eric VanSambeek. Suzanne Sousa coached and prepped the team. The team was required to do local presentations around the Milbank community as part of the participation for the District and State FFA Leadership.

In the Milbank Parliamentary Procedure, the Milbank Senior FFA Conduct of Meeting team was lead by: President Chase Pinkert and Milbank FFA Chapter members Magally Aburto, Sara Capp, Kellie Christians, Claire Mischel and Nathan Loutsch. In the event, the FFA officers must take a test over parliamentary procedure which includes how to conduct a meeting and how various motions are used. Each FFA officer team then must perform a mock meeting with a 12-minute time limit, with a specific topic in front of a group of judges, who selected the topic from a given list. Each FFA officer must perform a given parliamentary procedure ability and then perform a second ability not listed. After the meeting the judges then ask each officer a question dealing with their specific motion.

The Agriculture Communication team was made of Milbank FFA members of Siri Bien, Jessica Pillatzki, Logan Meyer and Shelby Lee. The team prepared an agricultural communication plan dealing with agriculture advocacy and presented to a panel of three judges. The team also had to take a test over communication and editing.

In the Extemporaneous Speech Contest, Nathan Loutsch participated. The Extemporaneous Speech Career Development Event is designed to develop the ability of all FFA members to express himself or herself on a given agricultural related subject without having prepared or rehearsed its content in advance. Members have to prepare a 4-6-minute presentation on a current agricultural issue in 30 minutes. The topics are unknown to the FFA members until they draw a specific topic for their speech when they start preparing.

In Prepared Public Speaking, Magally Aburto participated in the this Leadership Event. The purpose of the FFA Prepared Public Speaking Career Development Event is to develop agricultural leadership, communication skills, and promote interest in citizenship by providing member participation in agricultural public speaking activities, by researching, writing and presenting a 6-8 minute speech.
