Sioux Empire Farm Show

Supreme Row

SIOUX FALLS – Six purebred cattle breeds vied for the coveted $12,000 Supreme Row purse, sponsored by Tri-State Neighbor, Wells Fargo Bank and Campbell’s, during the week of the Sioux Empire Farm Show Jan. 23-27 in Sioux Falls.

The Hereford, SIP LLS 20Y Maximus 20E, was named Supreme Row Bull. Consigned by Sip Stock Farm, Morgan Sip, Ada, Minnesota, he was sired by TH 400U 32X Trump 206Z and out of MS Dakitch MDK Felina 20Y. He sold for $3,000 to Clarence Caraway, Lake Benton, Minnesota.

The Simmental, TENA Katora 637D, was named Supreme Row Female. Consigned by Kinsly Altena, George, Iowa, she was sired by TENA High Time 442B and out of TENA Miss Whisk 435B. She sold to Monte Kooistra, Larchwood, Iowa, for $4,500.

Breeding Heifer Show

Shelby Stephenson, Fortville, Indiana, exhibited the champion breeding heifer, a MaineTainer, at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Breeding Heifer Show Jan. 27 in Sioux Falls.

The reserve champion breeding heifer, an Angus, came from Ben Nikkel, McPherson, Kansas.

Brigham Stewart, Washington, Kansas, evaluated a total of 197 head that were shown in 46 classes.

Market Beef Show

Claire McCormick, Canyon, Texas, exhibited the champion market beef at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Market Beef Show Jan. 26 in Sioux Falls.

The reserve champion market beef was exhibited by Madi McCauly, Goldsby, Oklahoma.

Brigham Stewart, Washington, Kansas, evaluated the 31 market beef in five classes.

Third through fifth places overall were as follows: Julianna Albrecht, Howard, South Dakota; Riley Ruble, Albert Lea, Minnesota; and Carson Rieck, Creston, Iowa. The top five market beef animals’ premiums sold at the Mayor’s Round-up and Sale of Champions Jan. 26.

Feeder Heifer Show

Bennett Petersen, Grundy Center, Iowa, exhibited the champion feeder heifer at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Feeder Heifer Show Jan. 25 in Sioux Falls.

The reserve champion feeder heifer was exhibited by Payton Beare, Ree Heights, South Dakota.

Wyatt DeJong, Winner, South Dakota, evaluated 41 head in seven classes.

Feeder Steer Show

The reserve champion feeder steer, a crossbred, was exhibited by Sofia Valencia, Green Castle, Missouri.

Classes 13 through 23 were crossbred classes that were broken down into three divisions. The champions and reserves, respectively, in each division are as follows: Division 1: Colton Webb, Quinn Byker, Sioux Center, Iowa; Division 2: Julia Frye; Sofia Valencia; and Division 3: Ryland McCormick; Ansley Maronde.

4-H and FFA Youth Invitational Calf Show

Evan Rader, Tea, South Dakota, judged the 4H/FFA Youth Invitational Calf Show at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Jan. 23 in Sioux Falls.

Four classes of breeding heifers were shown with the grand champion heifer going to Allyson Beninga, Sioux Falls. Samantha Podzimek, Mitchell, South Dakota, exhibited the reserve champion heifer.

Thirty-one head were shown with first and second place in each of the six classes as follows, respectively: Class 1: Abby Blagg, Salem, South Dakota; Korey Moser, Larchwood, Iowa; Class 2: Allyson Beninga; Mckenzye Gunderson, Parker, South Dakota; Class 3: Samantha Podzimek (both); and Class 4: Tommy Norman, Luverne, Minnesota; Lexi Klein, Dell Rapids, South Dakota.

Twenty-six steers were shown in four classes. The champion steer came from Brent Nelson, Volga, South Dakota, with the reserve champion coming from Jaxon Schrag, Marion, South Dakota.

First and second places in each class, respectively, were: Class 1: Brent Nelson; Talen Hazel, Beresford, South Dakota; Class 2: Jaxon Schrag; Dylan Mente, Adrian, Minnesota; Class 3: Nick Kappenman, Madison, South Dakota; Trey Struck, Humboldt, South Dakota; and Class 4: Kiah Thiessen, Dell Rapids, South Dakota; Jude Moser, Larchwood, Iowa.

Seven feeder heifers were shown in two classes. Greyson Nielson, Arlington, South Dakota; showed the champion feeder heifer. Talen Hazel exhibited the reserve champion feeder heifer.

First and second places in each class were: Class 1: Greyson Nielson; Cody Larson, White, South Dakota; and Class 2: Talen Hazel; Mckenzye Gunderson.

Samantha Podzimek was named champion senior showman and received the Curt Alberty Memorial Award. Kendra Folkerts, Jasper, Minnesota, was named champion junior showman and received the Darla VanAsselt Memorial Award. Talen Hazel was named champion beginner showman and received the Bonnie Glass Memorial Award.

Angus Show and Sale

Brady Jensen, Brookings, South Dakota, judged the Sioux Empire Farm Show Angus Show Jan. 24 in Sioux Falls.

Jensen chose lot 61, BA Follow Me 704, a consignment from Bruhn Angus, Manning, Iowa, as champion bull. He was sired by BA Unlock 402 and out of Blackcap Lady BA 19. He was the highest selling bull for $7,500 to Alfred Fox, Watertown, South Dakota.

Reserve champion bull went to lot 27, Dandy Acres Conversation 07, a consignment from Dandy Acres Angus, Pipestone, Minnesota. He was sired by SAC Conversation and out of Dandy Acres Jestress 721. He sold to Lufco, Inc., Hartford, South Dakota, for $2,750.

The second highest selling bull was lot 48, a consignment from God’s Country Angus, Hinton, Iowa. He sold to Ronnie Prien, Stickney, South Dakota, for $5,250.

Jensen chose lot 5, K&J Georgina 617, a consignment from K&J Angus, Larchwood, Iowa, as champion female. She was sired by PVF Insight 0129 and out of Champion Hill Georgina 7067. She was the highest selling female and sold to Loren Halma, Inwood, Iowa, for $3,500.

Jensen chose lot 3X, SF Miss Blackbird ELLA 703, as reserve champion female. She was consigned by Scholtz Farm, Emily Scholtz, Comfrey, Minnesota. She was the second highest selling female and sold to Glenn Johnson, Pipestone, for $3,000.

Al Conover, Baxter, Iowa, served as auctioneer for the Angus Sale. He auctioned 32 bulls and nine females. Thirty-two bulls averaged $3,093.75, and the nine females averaged $2,133.33.

Red Angus Show and Sale

Wyatt DeJong, Winner, South Dakota, judged the Sioux Empire Farm Show Red Angus Show Jan. 25 in Sioux Falls.

DeJong chose lot 12, CSPF Cyclone 01E, a consignment from Luke Pladsen, Harpers Ferry, Iowa, as champion bull. He was sired by Silveiras Mission Nexus and out of Damar Oh Baby C139. He was the highest selling bull and sold for $7,000 to Manderfield Ag, Ames, Iowa.

Reserve champion bull went to lot 18, CB Blocker 1640, a consignment from Carruthers Brothers Ranch, Baltic, South Dakota. He was sired by Brown-CH Make Mimi X019 and out of CB Full Blockanna 1317. He sold to Jerry Tammen, Lennox, South Dakota, for $3,000.

The second highest selling bull was lot 22, a consignment from Carruthers Brothers Ranch. He sold to Ronald VanHeerde, Sioux Falls, for $3,400.

DeJong chose lot 3, CSPF Cinnamon 05E, a consignment from Luke Pladsen, as champion female. She was sired by Silveiras Mission Nexus and out of Pie Playmate 3002. She was the highest selling female and sold to Bruce Handel, Menno, South Dakota, for $3,300.

DeJong chose lot 1, DSF Sarah 1740, as reserve champion female. She was consigned by Double S Farms, Arco, Minnesota. She was sired by 3SCC Lancer Z173 and out of DSF Sarah 1322.

The second highest selling female was lot 4, a consignment from Hein Cattle Co., Osage, Iowa. She sold to Chase Pladsen, Ames, Iowa, for $1,700.

Seth Weishaar, Belle Fourche, South Dakota, served as auctioneer for the Red Angus Sale. He auctioned eight bulls and two females. Eight bulls averaged $3,212.50, and the two females averaged $2,500.

Hereford Show and Sale

The highest selling bull was lot 33, a consignment from Circle S Ranch, Stewartville, Minnesota. He sold to Dan Hrgreaves, Stickney, South Dakota, for $5,750. The second highest selling bull was lot 11, a consignment from Huwaldts Herefords, Randolph, Nebraska. He sold to Doug Noedhues, McLean, Nebraska, for $4,000.

Jensen chose lot 5, AH R117 MS Skeye K4 ET, a consignment from Huwaldts Herefords, as champion female. She was sired by SHF Rib Eye M326 R117 and out of Blacktop Blue Sky 848. She was the highest selling female and sold to Brad Huwaldt, Osmond, Nebraska, for $2,500.

Jensen chose lot 3X, SQCF MS Stryker 711, as reserve champion female. She was consigned by Stenberg Herefords, Colman, South Dakota. She was the second highest selling female and sold to Cody Williams, Colman, for $2,500.

Chisum Peterson, Pukwana, South Dakota, served as auctioneer for the Hereford Sale. He auctioned 14 bulls and four females. Fourteen bulls averaged $2,939.29, and the four females averaged $2,325.

Simmental Show and Sale

Daniel Weidenbach, Highmore, South Dakota, judged the Sioux Empire Farm Show Simmental Show Jan. 24 in Sioux Falls.

Weidenbach chose lot 13, HZN Easy Street E500, a consignment from Horizon View Farms LLC, Canova, South Dakota, as champion bull. He was sired by Hook’s Broadway 11B and out of B50. He was the highest selling bull and sold to Robert Wobig, Canova, for $5,500.

Reserve champion bull went to lot 37, LECC Badger D8, a consignment from Lance Ellsworth, Elkhorn, Wisconsin. He was sired by WS Revival and out of LECC Alaska S12. He was the second highest selling bull and sold to Rick Wolfswinkel, Wakonda, South Dakota, for $4,000.

Weidenbach chose lot 9, TENA Katora 637D, a consignment from Kinsly Altena, George, Iowa, as champion female. She was sired by TENA High Time 442B and out of TENA Miss Whisk 435B. She was the highest selling female and sold to Monte Kooistra, Larchwood, Iowa, for $4,500.

Weidenbach chose lot 10, Miss D088, as reserve champion female. She was consigned by Voss Ranch, Brookings, South Dakota. She was sired by CLRS Aftershock 604A and out of Miss 4088B.

The second highest selling female was lot 7, a consignment from Mark Family Simmental, Viborg, South Dakota. She sold to Chris Rasmussen, Hurley, South Dakota, for $2,700.

Chisum Peterson, Pukwana, South Dakota, served as auctioneer for the Simmental Sale. He auctioned 14 bulls and eight females. Fourteen bulls averaged $2,967.86, and eight females averaged $2,218.75.

Limousin Show and Sale

Megan Webb, Brookings, South Dakota, judged the Sioux Empire Farm Show Limousin Show Jan. 25 in Sioux Falls.

Webb chose lot 3, ROMN Executive Decision 100E, a consignment from ROM’N Limousin, Arlington, South Dakota, as champion bull. He was sired by ROMN Charlie Brown 130C and out of ROMN Concrete Proof 29C.

Reserve champion bull went to lot 15X, Master BRUN 3093D, a consignment from Bruner Limousin, Winfred, South Dakota. He sold to Laura Sieh, Clear Lake, South Dakota, for $2,900.

The highest selling bull was lot 18 from Bruner Limousin. He sold for $3,700 to Bryan Eigenberg, Windom, Minnesota. The second highest selling bull was lot 13, a consignment from Symens Bros. Limousin, Amherst, South Dakota. He sold to Sieh for $3,500.

Webb chose lot 2, MS Dakitch 103C Elvira 18E, a consignment from Dakitch Farms, Darci Kitchell, Ada, Minnesota, as champion female. She was sired by MAGS Y So Tangled and out of MS Dakitch DDLK 28Z Chloe 103C. She sold to Russell Johnson, Sebeka, Minnesota, for $3,000.

Webb chose lot 1, MS JDJL Half Millennium 500E, as reserve champion female. She was consigned by DeRungs Limousin, Ramona, South Dakota. She was sired by SYES Best Buy 316B and out of MS JDJL Bryce 252B.

Chisum Peterson, Pukwana, South Dakota, served as auctioneer for the Limousin Sale. He auctioned 11 bulls and one female. Eleven bulls averaged $2,654.55.

Charolais Show and Sale

Wyatt DeJong, Winner, South Dakota, judged the Sioux Empire Farm Show Charolais Show Jan. 25 in Sioux Falls.

DeJong chose lot 17, Wells Ultimate Diablo 6304, a consignment from Wells Charolais Ranch, Conde, South Dakota, as champion bull. He was sired by LJR MR Diablo 1750Z and out of Wells MS Dream 304. He was the highest selling bull and sold for $7,000 to Gail Radke, Parkston, South Dakota.

Reserve champion bull went to lot 10, NGC Brave 715E, a consignment from North Grove Charolais, Grove City, Minnesota. He was sired by LT Venture 3198 PLD and out of NGC Naomi 519C ET. He sold to Rob Myers, Pukwana, South Dakota, for $3,100.

The second highest selling bull was lot 16, a consignment from Wells Charolais Ranch. He sold to Radke for $5,000.

DeJong chose lot 18X, Wells MS Fancy 7906, a consignment from Wells Charolais Ranch, as champion female. She was the highest selling female and sold to Dave Walter, Gardner, Kansas, for $3,600.

DeJong chose lot 19X, Wells MS Aphrodite 7591, as reserve champion female. She was consigned by Wells Charolais Ranch. She was the second highest selling female and sold to Susanne Tenold, Chester, South Dakota, for $2,700.

Seth Weishaar, Belle Fourche, South Dakota, served as auctioneer for the Charolais Sale. He auctioned 12 bulls and two females. Twelve bulls averaged $3,079.17, and the two females averaged $3,150.

Market Lamb Show

Sam Schmillen, Marcus, Iowa, exhibited the champion market lamb at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Market Lamb Show Jan. 25 in Sioux Falls.

The reserve champion market lamb was exhibited by Madison Rule, Hawarden, Iowa.

Ryan Mortvedt, Lynnville, Iowa, judged a total of 27 lambs in five classes.

Third through fifth places overall were as follows: Riley Hoyle, Taylor, Arkansas; Sam Schmillen; and Allison Smith, Emporia, Kansas. The top five market lambs’ premiums sold at the Mayor’s Round-up and Sale of Champions Jan. 26.

Market Goat Show

Jack Hoyle, Taylor, Arkansas, exhibited the champion market goat at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Market Goat Show Jan. 26 in Sioux Falls.

The reserve champion market goat was exhibited by Hanna Peterson, Fedora, South Dakota.

Ryan Mortvedt, Lynnville, Iowa, judged a total of 41 goats in six classes.

Third through fifth places overall were as follows: Paige Stahl, Somerset, Pennsylvania; Jack Hoyle and Paige Stahl. The top five market goats’ premiums sold at the Mayor’s Round-up and Sale of Champions Jan. 26.

Market Swine Show

Andrew Hodges, Lebo, Kansas, exhibited the champion market hog, a crossbred barrow, at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Market Swine Show Jan. 24 in Sioux Falls.

The reserve champion market hog, a crossbred barrow, was exhibited by Zach Muller, Algona, Iowa.

Seth Ebert, Benedict, Nebraska, judged a total of 103 hogs. Hogs were shown in purebred and crossbred classes.

Easton Roeber, Ashland, Nebraska, exhibited the top purebred hog. Paige Miller, Torrington, Wyoming, had the reserve champion purebred hog.

Third through 10th places overall were as follows: Easton Roeber; Bradi Bohlke, Kingsley, Iowa; Paige Miller; Bradie Bohlke; Tyler Frasher, Anamosa, Iowa; Easton Roeber; Lauren Kaliff; and Lauren Kaliff. The top 10 market hogs’ premiums sold at the Mayor’s Round-up and Sale of Champions Jan. 26.

Collegiate Judging Contest

Two hundred eighteen 4-H and FFA members from 50 junior college and senior college teams from across the country competed in the Sioux Empire Farm Show Collegiate Judging Contest Jan. 27 in Sioux Falls.

Kansas State University White was first team overall in the senior college division with 4,172 points. Kansas State University Purple was second overall with 4,169.

Third through fifth place teams in the senior college division were Western Illinois #1, University of Wyoming #1 and Iowa State University Gold.

The high individual in the senior division was Dean Klahr, Kansas State White. Cody Hadden from University of Illinois was second overall.

Third through fifth place individuals were Luke Wechter, Western Illinois #1; Payton Dahmer, Kansas State Purple; and Nicholas Pitlick, University of Minnesota.

In the junior college division, Hutchinson Community College #3 was first with 4,131 points. Butler Community College #2 was second with 4,130 points.

Third through fifth place teams in the junior college division were Butler Community College #1, Illinois Central College #1 and Butler Community College #4.

Cooper Carlisle, Butler Community College #2, was the high individual in the junior college contest. Lexi Kaiser, Butler Community College #2, was second overall.

Third through fifth place individuals in the junior college division were Hadley Schotte, Hutchinson Community College #3; Skyler Scotten, Butler Community College #3; and Connor Vernon, Butler Community College #4.

Junior Judging Contest

Two hundred forty-one 4-H and FFA members from 54 teams and three states competed in the Sioux Empire Farm Show Junior Judging Contest Jan. 27 in Sioux Falls.

Turner County 4-H 1 was the high team with 1,358 points. Springfield Minnesota FFA 1 placed second with 1,345 points.

Third through 10th place teams were Mower County 4-H 1; Sioux Center FFA 1; Miner County 4-H 1; Le Mars FFA 1; Hinton FFA 1; Waseca FFA 1; Dallas County 4-H 1; and Turner County 4-H 2.

The high individual was Sydney Tlam, Up & Get It 4-H, Davison County, South Dakota, with 371 points. Samantha Richert, Springfield Minnesota FFA 1, placed second with 371 points. The tie was broken on total points scored in beef.

Third through 10th place individuals were Trevor Johnson, Turner County 4-H 1; Brayden Utesch, Le Mars FFA 2; Kristine Schechinger, Mower County 4-H 1; Austin Foss, Worth County 4-H 1; Carter Ross, Turner County 4-H 2; Kaylea Van Regenmorter, Sioux Center FFA 1; Colton Raatz, Pipestone County 4-H 1; and Layne Lunstra, Turner County 4-H 1.
