The 2019 National Western Angus Bull Sale is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver.

As the only sale hosted by the American Angus Association, the National Western Bull Sale celebrates the Angus breed’s impact on western ranching and the cattle’s continued influence over commercial herds as the profitable choice for quality-minded producers.

“Angus breeders have again consigned another excellent group of bulls for the 2019 NWSS Angus Bull Sale,” said David Gazda, sale manager and director of field services at the American Angus Association. “This year, approximately 35 bulls will be offered and are consigned from some of the most respected and progressive breeding programs in the country.

These bulls are backed by years of performance information and possess a complete set of genomically enhanced EPDs and $Value Indexes. Both the seedstock and commercial cattleman can come to Denver and buy with confidence, assured they are purchasing the most progressive, documented and high-accuracy genetics available in the Angus breed today.”

All consignments in the bull sale will have Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) performance information and a complete set of genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs). Each bull must rank in the top 50 percent of the breed for non-parent bulls for at least five of the EPDs and $Value Indexes that include calving ease direct (CED), birthweight (BW), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), scrotal circumference (SC), dollar weaning ($W), ribeye area (RE), marbling (Marb) and dollar beef ($B).

The ROV Angus Bull Show will kick off the NWSS Angus shows on Wednesday at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the Angus Bull Sale Show at 12 p.m. A three-person committee will place the bulls in the sale show to make the sale order. Judges for the event will be: Lake Elliott, Adams, Tennessee; Joe Fisher, Sacramento, California; and Landi McFarland-Livingston, Ellston, Iowa.

The Angus Foundation Heifer Package and confirmed heifer pregnancies auction at 5:30 p.m., and the NWSS Angus Bull sale will follow.

Foundation Heifer Package and Heifer Pregnancies

Angus breeders continue to exceed the challenge of pushing the breed forward through their generous support of the Angus Foundation Heifer Package and confirmed heifer pregnancies. Since 1980, the Angus Foundation has sold high-end heifers in the Heifer Package to generate unrestricted funds for Angus education, youth and research efforts. The Angus Foundation also will auction off five cutting-edge confirmed heifer pregnancies from notable Angus breeders. The Angus Foundation Heifer Package and confirmed heifer pregnancies sale will start at 5:30 p.m., followed immediately by the National Western Angus Bull Sale.

Krebs Ranch of Gordon, Nebraska, is donating the elite heifer, KR Queen 8213, for the 2019 Angus Foundation Heifer Package. The package also includes: 30 days of free insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Illinois; free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Illinois; and an advanced reproductive technology package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa.
