SDSU researchers prepare to present 10 swine research abstracts at the Midwest Section of the American Society of Animal Science
BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University swine researchers from the Department of Animal Science will present 10 research abstracts at the Midwest Section meeting of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) and the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) in Omaha, Neb., from March 11-13, 2019.
The Department of Animal Science opened the new SDSU Swine Education and Research Facility on Oct. 1, 2016. Consisting of three buildings – the Sow Teaching and Intensive Research Complex, the On-Site Wean-to-Finish Research Barn and the Off-Site Wean-to-Finish Production Barn – these new swine facilities have opened up many new opportunities for students and researchers at SDSU.
“SDSU remains a leader in swine research, extension and teaching” says Dr. Joe Cassady, SDSU Animal Science Department Head. “Working at the forefront of innovation, we are providing the swine industry information in the areas of nutrition, reproduction and health.”
The SDSU swine herd consists of 150 sows managed in five groups with 30 sows per group. The production system is designed for batch farrowing every four weeks and weaning at 21 days of age. The second annual SDSU Swine Day was held on Nov 6, 2018 in Brookings, S.D.
